A friend of mine is nervous because she is a teacher (sick kids all day) and the doctors have told her that her not quite 2 year old could be in the high risk category since he has a respiratory condition. Most people will be fine but it's those with compromised immune systems (stay away from people having chemo) who really have to watch it.

Your friend was lucky, Shannon. Not everyone will have her immune system. The fatality numbers are still pretty grim, and the mutability of the virus is still lively. Hopefully with all the warnings, vaccine, preventative measures, it won't be a "big deal" to too many people.

Someone I work with got it and she was fine within a week. I've had colds that've last longer!! I really don't understand the big deal. It's just like having the regular flu.

We had a patient come in with it last week. Apparently it is very dangerous for pregnant women so I am now on freakin Tamiflu just in case...fantastic

Vaccines are supposed to be widely available by the end of the month. I think they are available in some places already, just not on a mass-level.

WHO calls it a pandemic
But what does the World Health Organization know? Seems it's taking a break in the northern hemisphere's summer. Hopefully by classifying it a pandemic we can stop it quickly as well by being cautious/overly prepared.

Yeah, it's hard to tell if it's spreading rapidly. More likely all the newly discovered cases are just that - newly discovered.

I don't why they can't get the Houston story right - the kid (not a baby, he was 2 years old) was from MEXICO CITY. they were in Texas visiting relatives. so the flu came in from Mexico, not Houston.
