Bill Simmons (espn.com writer) brought up the interesting point the other day that for the past ten years you heard very little about MJ and his impact on music and how big of fans everyone was, but the day he dies suddenly people have all kinds of stories about how they were raised listening to his music and watching his videos and how their lives were impacted by him.

Brett, I think a LOT of people see it your way too. He was just...deranged. Crazy.

Saw him in 1987. Think it was then. The Bad tour. Fabulous. Sheryl Crow was one of his backup singers. Probably one of the best concerts I've ever seen. Top five for sure.

So the media is saying that MJ is not the father, Debbie Rowe is not the mother and MJ never legally adopted the kids. Hmmmmm??? This is going to be quite the custody circus.

What really rubbed me the wrong way is when MJ's dad and Al Sharpton had a press conference and started promoting himself. Pretty distasteful in my opinion.

I'm sorry for all of you who's lives and childhoods have now been dramatically changed, but I can't separate the man from his actions and therefore can't separate the music from the man from his actions. Every time a clip is played where he is grabbing is privates, there's some kid/person is therapy cringing and trying to come to terms with what jackson did or tried to do to him.

What's so crazy about this is just how fast the news spread. I mean, the second the news hit...it was like the whole world knew. I've never seen anything quite like it my lifetime.

I was thinking last night how strange it must be for his friends- or even for his contemporaries - to witness his passing. I mean, I would never think that Liz Taylor would outlive MJ. What is Macauley thinking? How about Brooke Shields and Lisa Marie? I know Corey Feldman was on TV last night talking about it and he was showing some sunglasses MJ gave him from the Victory tour.

I've always been wondering, how much it must hurt, when some of my favorite artists dies. Now I know what it really feels like. It's absolutely heartbreaking - and MJ was the greatest for me, greater than JM.

my best friend and I used to unfold the Thriller album, prop it up on her dresser (because he reclined the length of the jacket and that's just how we had to have it) and play that record over and over again. and we'd take turns holding the sleeve with all the words until we finally knew every word to every song.

what's sad is that when I have kids I'm sure they'll love Michael Jackson, but it won't mean the same as it does to us. they won't have the same...

I came here to see what my music friends had to say about this and hardly a word. Thank God for you, Holly! Anyway, I can't believe this has really happened. I'm curious what the scene looks like in Japan right now. Personally, I feel like my childhood is slipping away bit by bit. My Dad and I used to dance to Thriller in the living room and I remember so clearly the evening that the television stations were taken over to show Black and White. What a sad and lonely life he had...

Loved them both. RIP Still remember the amazing energy in the Hartford Civic Center when I saw MJ live during the Thriller tour. I was up in one of the sky boxes and had to use binoculars to see him, but Billy Jean was fucking stupendous.
