i tried searching the forum but couldn't find it anywhere..what pickups does john use in his sunburst strat on any given thursday? is it the srv he bought
with tex spec? sorry if this is a stupid question. also i'm thinkin bout new pickups for a strat..i liekd the cs 69s that come stock in the classic players
strat (dece price too). the cs 54s are harder to come by but i was listening to them on a site and they sound pretty good. it's been debated as to waht
john has in his relic, but it seems people are hinting most at the 57/62s and the cs54s. i wasn't crazy about the 54s. waht can you tell me about the
57/62s? thanks

The 57/62's are nice but there are many other boutique pickup makers you could try. Don't forget about Lindy Fralins or Bark Knuckles pickups out of
the UK.

I just dropped some Lindy Fralins into one of my strats and they're great pickups. Fralin also sells a blender pot that lets you blend the neck and bridge
together for some interesting sounds. Also a big fan of the cs 69s.

57/62s are very nice, go plays an AV 62 those are the pickups that come standard. As for the AGT SRV strat it is the stock pickups but they were wound
differently from the manufacturer which fender has tried to copy and release in the JM Sig as the Big Dippers.

This is a question for those of you who use Fralins. Which would you prefer, or find you get the most Mayer-esque sounds out of? I'm looking at the blues
or vintage hot. From the output it seems that the vintage hot would be the lowest output, despite its name. Can someone please explain?
Thanks in advance. edit for spelling |

i checked out that site..it was pretty helpful. the 69s sound definitely brighter than the fat 50s..even a bit more so than the 54s. i still have yet to hear
the 57/62s. how do they compare to the 69s? which would be closer to john's sound?

His sunburst in AGT is his slightly modded SRV strat. He loved its tone, so when he got his own 'signature' models he brought it in for Fender to
analyze. The SRV has texas specials, but John's had a defect in that the mids were scooped much more than most TexSpecials. Fender replicated this in his
sigs, dubbing them 'Big Dippers.'

Do we actually have a quote of somebody telling us this or is it us assuming that? Cos i've never heard that his pickups had a defect.

caboose, how do you know all that? Am I btw the only one in here that doesn't like the JM sig?

i've read about it somewhere (the defect thing) either here or something. but it is true that the big dippers are just a variation of the texas specials.

you just may be the only that doesn't like the JM sig... it just happens to be the most fitting Fender guitar on the market for me (not including the
costum made)... everything from the neck to pick ups is absolutely fantastic...
so my vote goes to the Dippers.... as for John's AGT guitar goes, I have no idea, what pick ups are in it... posters above me apparently do... |

its been noted in several places, do I seriously have to provide citations? arg... I was a poli sci major for 4 years, I thought I was done with bibliography
pages.... I'm a gear junkie and read about this stuff, that's how I know. Plus you can hear it if you've got a good ear.
http://www.tdpri.com/forum/stratocaster-discussion-forum/39600-finally-played-john-mayer-sig-gc-tonight.html#post384875 check posts #4, #5 http://www.tdpri.com/forum/stratocaster-discussion-forum/39600-finally-played-john-mayer-sig-gc-tonight.html#post384875 Damn, the main source (and why I believed it) I can't find now. It was an actual interview with john about 'how cool it was to actually get his own sig. model at fender.' He briefly mentioned that he roughly based his sig of HIS #1 strat, the '94 (or '96)SRV he bought with gas station money. The pickups were Texas Specials with a small defect in that the mids were wound weak, or 'scooped'. Fender replicated this in the sig as "Big Dippers." I was a great interview, sorta po'd that I can't find it. |

how does john get such a clean, clear tone a la lenny/man on the side and city love? compressor or is it via the keeley katana clean boost? thanks for all the
info so far

rylemup, to try and answer your question, i haven't had much experience with the Fralin vintage hots but i can tell you that the blues specials are kinda hot relative to normal strat pickups. They probably aren't ideal for that low output Mayer sound in my opinion. but they're still great pickups, especially if you're looking for a little more output or SRV type sound. Hope that helps some |
