So... I'm thinking about moving... probably to Atlanta, but I really have no idea where the cool places to live over there are, so I'm hoping that you
all can give me some insight. My friend and I are going to take a road trip up there soon to check it out, but we have no idea where to look or where to go, so
if you have somethin' to say about Atlanta, post a message. Thanks!!!!

Virginia Highlands and Midtown are my favs. Decatur is also nice and I think it's still a little cheaper.

My boyfriend just moved to Buckhead and loves it. I'm going to visit him in a few weeks so if I remember I'll come back and give a heads up on it.

Your location will probably all depend on where you're going to work. Any idea where the office will be?

I'm moving to Atlanta to go to Georgia State at the end of May. Gonna be living with my girlfriend somewhere around there. Pretty excited. I love that
city.

Shannon, I'm headed to ATL tomorrow for a week to go loft shopping (for purchase.) We'll be in a condo off Hyland, which is where we're aiming,
near Little Five Points. If you want, I can take extra notes to give you once we get back (we're returning around Friday.) If you want, you can PM me, and
I'll let you know what we find out. My roommate just graduated and has lived there for a few years, and wants to move back, so she knows the area fairly
well.
Countdown in less than 12 hours... all I want is one good kareoke night. I swear! |

If price is a factor and you have to live in downtown actual, Decatur isn't too shabby. And East Atlanta isn't too bad either, they're doing a good
job of making that area nicer.
Stay away from Atlantic Station. Just 2 years in and they're already having some problems with some of the buildings in regards to leakages and stuff. And its overpriced. Little 5 isn't as "cool" as it used to be, its gotten more and more corporate as the years have gone by. The Highlands and Midtown have become the current hot places. If you don't mind doing a little driving, say 10 or so minutes, Marietta or Perimeter aren't too bad places either.

Amy! That would be amazing if you could take some "extra notes" for me... I'm going to PM you right now.
I'm not sure where I would work yet. I'm an event planner now, so I'll probably keep doing that. I commute 45+ mins. (one way) to my current job, which is a nightmare, but I don't mind a little bit of driving. If I'm going to move, I need to be in a cool/fun/exciting part of town... so wherever that is, that's where I want to live! Also, I probably wouldn't move until the end of the year, if I decide to, so I have a lot of time. Thank you everyone for your comments... keep 'em coming!!

Given that your office destination is unknown, Virginia Highlands is a cool place but with most cool places it's expensive, same with Midtown. I'd also look at the Vinings area, it's ITP (inside the perimeter) and has great access to 75 and 285 and is about a 20 min drive to midtown and easy to hop over to Buckhead. You may also want to consider the West Midtown area which is an evolving area to the west of Georgia Tech. But for me location really depends on where your home office will be given traffic patterns. For an event planner it sounds like you'll be driving a decent amount anyway since events are all over the place. |

Where's Jocelyn? She's the guru of all things Atlanta.
I second Decatur, Highlands, Midtown, but that city is changing so much. My brother lives in Dunwoody and likes it a lot. Friends of mine lived in Marietta for a while and liked that too. But, I second the idea of finding out where you're going to work FIRST and then narrowing down your living situation. Traffic is a nightmare in that city. Kim |

damn, shan, i am so excited you might be moving to one of my fave places EVER!
i second what brian and others have said about the whole traffic thing. it's traffic unlike anything you've experienced, i can guarantee that. when i was down there in '05 for the JM eddie's run, i was staying with my friend in ATL, towards the north but still in the perimeter. it took 55 minutes to get to decatur, which is less than 15 miles away, just to give you an example. that said, while i love the city, i really don't know how much housing costs because i lived on emory's campus for all 4 years of college. i do like the decatur area a lot, which is where emory is. you're in very close proximity to all of the other neighborhoods mentioned so far in this thread, and only 15 mins. or so from downtown. once you do make the move, i'll be sure to give you a ton of food recommendations~ oh, by the way, if you have allergies at all, be prepared for them to be 543042x worse in ATL. the pollen count is lethal. ~joc

One of my best friends went to the Aveda Institute down there and lived in Buckhead and my cousin lives there now. Great neighborhood with lots to do and close
to everything. However, it's kind of pricey. You may have to scrifice size for location.
East Andrews is a pretty cool place to hang out if you decide on Buckhead. |

I'm moving to Roswell in a few months which is North of Atlanta (I currently live in middle GA). If you're not looking at a proclaimed ritzy are like
Buckhead, you have to drive around and get a feel for the area. In most places it's a nice area for a couple miles, and then it turns into the ghetto real
quick. I have spent the past year looking around Atlanta for apartments on the internet and it's almost impossible to find somewhere that way. When's
your road trip? Where do you live now?
