You were forced to watch the side stages and go to 13+ shows?

yes chained and dragged.. and no I guess I could have slipped on my earbuds while i was hiding in the bathroom..but sadly I didn't.
I road trip with friends..it's my vacation. It's what I love to do now that my kids have their own lives... I went to see Mayer and I have never complained about any of his opening acts..I usually am a very complacent concert goer. I never talk during the opening act, its rude..If I am sitting there because my friends want to see him..I am a good sport..I can giggle internally. debbie sadly Pat I don't tailgate...it's more of a sports thing I think at least around here..I see it in the east coast, but cali not so much...we go out to eat and arrive fashionably late and pay for valet.

I agree with the rest, if you want to become a professional musician... playing big time shows.. then your going to have to open. Thats your big chance to
persuade people to listen to your music or give them a sample. I really liked James Morrison last year opening up and I have since listened to more and more of
his music, and I wouldn't actually mind going to a concert of his. I always enjoy the opening acts.. Just sit back and listen to music.. hopefully its
good.

Sorry Ryan...not gonna happen. We're stuck with Colbie & Brett...there might be a couple of pre-opening acts added to the bill, but Ben Folds is not
gonna be one of them! It would be awesome to see him again (bitches can't hang with the streets!), but sadly I think it was a one-time deal.
Cait...I really like your idea of watching the live shows at a local bar/venue for those that got screwed on L83. I don't think it could be open to the general public though, because then how would they sell tickets to the actual live show? They wouldn't. But it would be a nice special perk for us fan club members.

but ryan...you can listen to ben folds on the internet, can't you??
yeah monica, i think they could swing it...either sell the telecast tickets at face value to the public or at a reduced rate to L-83 members...or just bank that everybody will drink lots and charge for drinks? if celine dion could broadcast an entire worldwide tour home to her dad husband while he recovered from cancer, they can set this up for L-83 no problem. P.S. - PBR, pat!?! yuuuck. that stuff's almost as bad as milwaukee's best beast. somebody needs to teach you about good beer. thought you were classier than PBR...

Debbie, I've never been to Cali, but I bet a healthy number of people tailgate. Then again, it could be that I can't imagine a summer concert without
it! That's part of the fun.
I wouldn't pay $20 to see a live stream of Mayer. Sorry, but I'd wait for someone to up the live recording. I don't know what it is about live performances (and sports) on a televison screen, but I get bored really easily.

I don't care for Dennen at all, but I somehow blocked him out on Mayercraft. Maybe it's because I was talking to people. I honestly can't say that
I heard more than a minute of his songs. But there are ways to avoid people you don't like opening up at a concert. I don't particularly care for Ben
Folds, but I avoided him night two of a three night concert stint by just going to the opposite end of the venue. :shrug

I'm no fan of Brett Dennen either, but I would much rather see him than Ben Folds again. I used to enjoy Folds' music, but was tremendously
disappointed when I saw him open for John in Hershey last summer. There's a difference between having good energy and being a good performer, and he was
definitely not the latter. I also question the decision to have him as an opener because his music is so polarizing. Anyone at that show could see that James
Morrison outshined Folds tremendously as both a musician and performer. It seemed that the people that really enjoyed him were the immature few who still
chuckle when they hear a curse word.

I'm not a Ben Folds fan, but I did give it a try and really enjoyed his performance in Atlanta. I already loved James Morrison, so it was just gravy seeing
him. I'm not looking forward to Brett or Colbie - guess I'll be checking out the merch or wandering around during his/her set.

wow he must not have played his synth solo standing on his piano bench during "Such Great Heights" at that show...

I don't know the names of many of his songs, so I don't know if he played that. I wouldn't go see him on purpose, but he did keep me awake,
entertained and in my seat, which is more than I can say for Brett or Colbie, who can't even keep my attention through an entire song.

in one way or another, i've become a fan of most of john's openers:
guster (was a fan before the coheadline) martin sexton (didn't see him open for john, but went to see him at eddie's because my friend saw him open) david mead maroon five counting crows (coheadline made me buy august and everything after 9 years late. better late than never) mat kearney james morrison i agree with corey & pat -- if you don't like someone, don't sit through the act. it's gonna be a summer tour, so there should be stuff to do outside prior to the show. find people that share your major disdain and do something else~ that, or bring earplugs. the latter worked marvelously when i went to see the who and they had an opener. (why the fuck did they have an opener?!) the band was called peeping tom, and i'm pretty sure my eardrums would have kicked my ass for listening to such crap if i hadn't brought the earplugs. the "music" was screaming for an hour to the 1/4 full madison square garden. atrocious. i have to say that i wasn't originally a fan of brett's music, but after i saw him live for the first time in '06, that changed a bit. i think i've seen him 4 or 5 times now, and i've definitely become a fan. the best show so far was at the bowery ballroom in october of last year. i really can't stand the bare feet, but i can't stand anyone's bare feet. also, don't forget that most people see one john mayer show a year, if they're lucky. that means they see one opener, so most of them have not seen brett play. as for colbie, i liked her set on the mayercraft because her voice is really cool, but i have to listen to her lyrics more carefully before deciding whether or not i'm a fan of those. ~jocelyn

Ben Folds kicked the asses of all JM's openers ever. I had so much fun at every show.
Joc, I think I'm going to need to see a Dennen show with you one day in order to get over my dislike. I think he just caught me off-guard with his sound when I was huddling to keep warm in ATL. Ever since then, I hang outside the venue until his dulcet tones have faded. Also, Becky - "Such Great Heights" is a Postal Service song. It was covered, beautifully, by Iron & Wine. You might have heard their version if you haven't heard the original. Ben has been covering it for years. It makes me sad you don't know your Postal Service! Below is a YouTube of the original, followed by Ben's version (from last year's Summerfest). Maybe it will ring a bell. eta: I'm really looking forward to seeing Colbie. "Battle" has gotten me through some really shitty times in the last year.

Oh damn. No love for Colbie or Brett. I actually liked Colbie on the Mayercraft. She was one of those people who sells you with her live show. I bought her cd
and I think it's great. And there are not a lot of cds that I can say that about. I actually like "Bubbly" the least. The other songs on it are
much, much better.
And Brett's music has grown on me. His music has a very reggae feel, and I have found that people either love reggae or hate it. I don't think I would ever play his cds nonstop ala Mayer. But let's face it, NO ONE is Mayer. I could care less about the opener. Just give me Mayer. Well, I'd care if the opener was Matt Nathanson. And hey, Martin Sexton was excellent. I'd take him as an opener any day. |

First off, my avatar pic is of Bill from "Freaks and Geeks." If you aren't familiar with that show, you're missing out.
I totally stand by what I said about Ben Folds. All I can say is what I thought of his set and the general response of the crowd from those I talked to or heard. There were very few people who were into his set (frat guys and sorority girls), especially after seeing the great response from James Morrison. To clarify my statement that he wasn't a good performer, it seemed to me like he was doing all this experimental stuff and playing for himself rather than the crowd. He sure seemed to be having fun, but I don't think it translated with the majority of people. I've been seeing shows for a very long time, and came into it very familiar with Folds' music, so I don't think I "missed the whole point." I know it's taboo to go against John, but just because he thinks something is a good idea, doesn't necessarily always make it always the case. |

I have to sat I agree totally with Heather. Ben Folds kicked ass on all the stops I saw. Especially in the south where he was the home town boy. And in
California everyone was so pumped to see him...I like James Morrison but to compare him to Folds who is a seasoned performer...well I just think he needs
some more time on stage. Oh the Texas shows..sorry edited to say..he got a great response.
Everyone has their opinions, but believe me on all the stops I was at there were very few people even paying attention to Morrison but Folds??? I can tell from my tapes...Morrison dead quiet.. or people talking over him...Folds people were going nuts...singing along. and I'm not even a Folds fan persay... althoughI knew of him but after this tour I would see him as an headliner...no problem. debbie
