looking at one but still.

Sorry, my data is knowing users that hate their cars? That's pretty much all I need to know to not buy one.

I wouldn't ever buy an American car. I don't care if they claim to have the same satisfaction and quality now as foreign. My boyfriend has an 05 Chevy
Colorado and the drive train thing a majig had to be replaced a couple of months ago, and if he hadn't chosen the "bumper to bumper warranty for the
life of the deal" option (which is extra $ per month) he would have has to spend $3000 to have it replaced. It's a piece of shit and all he does it
drive it to and from work. It's not like he goes off-roading with it. A couple of other minor things have gone wrong with it to and overall it's pretty
shitty quality.

Tarz,
Have you checked out Nissans? I used to drive a Nissan and am now in an Infinity and love them both lots. |

I'll never buy a Volkswagen, based on the following experiences:
1) my sister got a brand new Passat around '99 or '00 that was a piece of garbage and a money-sucking pit 2) my college roommate had a Jetta that spent more time in the shop than on the road 3) one of my other friends from college got a Cabriolet after we graduated that was so god-awful that the Lemon Law actually took effect and she got her money back after almost 6 months of endless repairs. |

i bought a new car because i wanted one, but i am also in a financial situation where a new car purchase doesn't impact my finances by much. That being
said, i wouldn't buy a new one if i couldn't afford a decent down payment - at least 20%. Financing 100% hurts your overall APR a lot.
that and i had no other debt/credit payments going on, so it was an easy way to have an ongoing payment to keep my credit score active.

Oh and to echo Jennie, my mom has driven an Infinity for 10 years and has no problems, plus it drives like you are on a cloud. I would definitely buy an
Infinity next if I could financially afford something more than a Civic.

The Passat I bought in 1991 was a piece of shit. I would never buy another. I have never had any issues with my Audis other than expensive body work.

Ours was a 91 too! By the time I was driving it in HS it was only 5 years old and falling apart. One time a belt fell off on my way home from school. It just
fell off! We had to have it in the shop 3 times before they could fix it properly.

YEs the Passat was a nightmare. I will agree with Jenny that my Nissan Maxima was probably the best car I ever had.

Oh come on guys, don't make me wish I hadn't taken my car to the shop today and bought the Mazda instead. (Or test driven some other cars.)
My mom had a Nissan Maxima when I was in elementary school, and it "talked." In this smooth, woman's voice it'd say, "Your fuel is low." or "Your door is ajar." We always joked it was Kit from Night Rider's girlfriend. Anyway, fortunately a VW was never a car I considered. As far as the Nissans and Hyundai's, I didn't test drive those, but add those to the Subaru and the other many cars I could choose from, and I'd NEVER make a decision! I'll probably look at the Accord again in a couple years and check out a few others. Who knows what'll be available then...I guess that's part of the fun in waiting? And Brett, you sound like my dad. ~Tara |

Tarz, I like to have different cars frequently and multiple cars (even in HS I had 2 cars and a motorcycle at the same time) and I cannot afford to buy new
ones (and suffer their depreciation) every year or two. If I was planning on keeping a car, i'd definitely consider something new.

tarz, you made the right decision. a civic that age still has another 10 years left, and think of the money youll be saving. repairs may seem a bit much, but
if you think of the $250ish/month your car payment would be repairs all of a sudden seem minimal. if nothing else start putting whatever your payment would
have been in a high yield savings account and youll have a repair slush fund (that youll rarely touch) and a wicked down payment

I just bought a Nissan Rogue, LOVE IT. It was my first new car. Ever. It wasn't a necessity, but I have total piece of mind driving a fully warranted new
car. My 2000 Solara was fine, but not having my boyfriend or Dad nearby gave me a lot of pause about potential breakdowns.
Tarz, do what you want, sock away a little bit each month for potential repairs and buy when you're really ready. I've owned a Chevy, Toyota, Honda and now a Nissan and I would never buy American again. Also, Consumer Reports is your friend. Their reviews are typically spot-on. Oh yeh, and ditto to the Jetta/Passat nightmare stories. I have at least 4 personal friends with the same experiences. Kim |

Is there a reason you are not considering buying a hybrid, Tara? I fill my tank once/month in my Honda Civic hybrid.

For the price of a hybrid (in my opinion) they're not worth it just yet. And I'm not knocking hybrids or their owners, but if one was REALLY all that
concerned about being kind to the environment, they'd buy used. Or even buy a car that doesn't use as much energy or raw materials to build. People
never think about what it takes before the car rolls out of the factory. Also, we wanted to kill some time one day so we went to a Toyota dealership, and even
the salesman said that right now, buying something small like the Yaris for $11k that gets 35-40 MPG is more economical than the prius that starts at $21k and
gets 45-50 MPG.
I also heard that hybrids don't last as long as a regular car, so in the long run it's not a good idea. But I don't have any first hand info to back that up. I've just read it online edited to add: MAMA I love you and all, don't take this post personally! Just chiming in on the hybrid issue

so soon after Mother's Day?
Let's compare gasoline budgets and then grow your hair out in dreds, Dude. Edited to say, Andrea, I cannot imagine how that theory has been real-life road tested, since the hybrids have only been out since 2002 or so. Both ours (Honda Civic and Ford Escape) are still a dream and getting better gas mileage the longer we own them, plus no repairs. I wish we didn't need a 4wd, but where we live, we do. We favor the Honda whenever possible....58 mpg.
