I hope you really read this message board, because as an avid fan and traditionally a non-blogger, I have something extremely important to say and I hope you'll take it to heart. I was at the concert in Columbia, MD last night. You were fabulous, as usual. My seats were great. The audience was pumped. Even those folks with lawn seats getting completely drenched by the continuous torrential downpours that lasted well into the evening. I dedicate this blog post to them: PLAY A LONGER SET. After little over an hour (encore included), you walked off stage never to return. I mean, seriously?! What's up with that? If you (or your management co. or whoever) insist on selling $30 t-shirts, $65 sweatshirts, $80+ tickets (once all those freakin' service and "convenience" fees are included), I must insist that you keep your bluesy lil' butt on stage for at least 2 hours. Like you said during the show, 'You guys [the audience] wait months to see this show, staring at that ticket on your dresser every day just waiting and waiting for the day to finally come, and I hope I'm giving you the show you've been waiting for.' Well, next time, I hope I'm able to say, 'Yes, John Mayer. Yes, you did.'

He doesn't have to play at all. Are you delusional? Yes, he does have to play. Why? Because this is what he signed up for--this is the career path he chose and the reason he gets a paycheck four thousand times the size of most average, hardworking Americans. Do you have to go to work in the morning when you wake up? No--no one has to "DO" anything. But you know that it is your job, and should you continue to slack, you know that the consequence will more then likely be termination. Why should a musician/artist be any different? Especially considering their choice of career is slightly more rewarding then that of others attempting to actively contribute to the country's economy via their occupations. Although it's truly Ticket Bastard that is raping the consumers price-wise, it is the artist's responsibility to make sure they fulfill the price of that ticket via their performance. True, not all sets are as long as others and yes, there are times when shows are cut short for reasons beyond the artist's control. However, every show go-er, as an individual who paid the price to experience a form of entertainment and leisure in their life, is entitled to their opinion. If you go to the store to buy a shirt, and are disappointed with the quality, why would you not complain? When your money is on the line--especially when it comes to your leisure time, and especially in a time where the current budgets and wallets of many don't exactly ALLOW for a great deal of lesiure time (If any!)--it's not only permissable to question the value of your purchase, it is one hundred and ten percent understandable. I am by no means saying that I agree with the poster on all aspects, nor do I know if the show was as short as he/she claims as I was not there. However, "he doesn't have to play at all" and "just be happy he showed up at all" are not valid defenses against someone questioning the value of their concert going experience. Artists get the ability to do what they dream about via our money; if we don't buy their albums, the label drops them. If we don't go to their concerts, the tour is canceled. If we don't wear their t-shirts, people forget who they are. So try and remember that it's US that provide the opportunity for someone like John Mayer to do what he loves everyday and without US, he wouldn't be standing on that damn stage playing two hour sets at all. Mayer has been pretty much phoning it in for a while, it seems. Shows are getting shorter and shorter, banter is less and less, and the proliferation of legions of overaged and easily impressed ass-kisser types following him like some sort of misdirected habitual groupie from the 60's makes show attendance more annoying than enjoyable. Too much John worship, not enough to truly merit the awe anymore. This type of half-assery and "same old, same old" is exactly why I haven't even bothered to try to see a show of his for the last three times he's taken himself out on the road. Some shows better than others setlist and banter wise? Yes, but I've never left a show thinking he didn't give it his all. Type kristyciera into the referral box when you book your room!

Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Yes, the Columbia show was ridiculously short, about an hour shorter than the Camden show I saw a couple days earlier, Crossroads was 2 minutes long, Slow Dancing and Bigger than my Body were stripped down to the bare neccesities. However, Californified, if you've ever gone and saw a show at Merriweather Post you would know that they have noise ordinances forbidding any act from playing past 10:30, hence the shortened show.

The man rocked it out for almost 2 hours. He had short funny banters and then made the song so much stronger than ever before. Not once did he look like he was taking it easy. I have been to Mayer concerts dating back to 2004. Looked better than ever before!

Her review kind of sealed the deal for me when I sold my third and sixth row seats to this show at face. If I had driven 110 miles round trip in the pouring rain for a 60 minute set, I would be pissed today. Fortunately, I got a nice email from the guy who bought the 3rd row tickets for his folks, and they had a blast. I'm reminded of the "Divorce" blog, or interview, or whatever, John posted to fans last year. I truly don't see the point of the folks who are defending a show they didn't even attend. Does anything John does ever rub you guys the wrong way? How do folks lap up things like answering trivia questions about John Mayer in order to get a picture taken at an "Eat and Greet"? I normally save the John Mayer snark comments for private emails and IMs, but honestly, enough. Sam--based on your post of your poorly thought out "two cents", I have trouble believing you read or even comprehended ninety percent of what I said. If people are entitled to their opinions, as you say, and those opinions conflict, maybe it's not so much a "pointless argument" as it is just an open discussion with different thoughts and viewpoints. Not every person making posts on this message board is doing so because they have an undying love and adoration for John Mayer. Some people are here because they adore the music--not so much the man. DRHSoulclap made the most valid point in saying that the venue had noise ordinance--something I figured might have been a possibility in this case, and referred to in my original post when saying there are sometimes issues that cap a set short which are beyond the artist's control. I can't even count how many Mayer shows I've seen (and I am in no way saying that to be pompous or condescending) but what I can tell you is that some were phenomenal, some were okay and some were downright disappointing. Do I expect perfection at every show? No. But do I think we as the consumer are entitled to complain if we don't feel satisfied? ABSOLUTELY. If you don't wish to hear an opinion that conflicts with your own, or one which possibly attempts to knock John Mayer off the pedestal some of you have so clearly positioned him on, perhaps you should live in a cave or go find Richard Grochmal to re-ignite sixfeetsmall.com.

I have noticed that John doesn't play the longest shows. Maybe that is why he has two opening acts. I do think that with all the effort people make to see the shows that he should play at least 1 1/2 hours or even two. Maybe the curfew could explain the short time. Last Summer I was at a crowded house show and they had a curfew and they literally turned off the sound equipment during the middle of a song. It was so rude but Neil Finn finished the song with just his little guitar and no amplifier or sound. I just saw Stevie Wonder and he had no opening act but he played for over two hours straight with no breaks. He was fantastic! At one point he asked the audience "are we good?" and I think everyone left feeling satisfied. No encore but it wasn't needed after that long of show. I'm hoping for a longer show for Shoreline. -Robin

Of course he doesn't want to play sometimes. That's life. There are certain days when you don't feel like going to work, yet you go. You end up sucking all day because you don't want to be there, but you have no other choice. It happens. It's not right or cool, but it happens. I've been to shows that are way amazing. And I have been to shows that absolutely blew. Like Bridget said, you are definitely entitled to complain as a consumer, however that does not change the fact that people have bad days sometimes. I'm not entirely sure that was the case this time, but it merely provides a tangible argument stating that sometimes we get the raw end of a deal...and it sucks. Jon www.jongarciamusic.com

I think he does douchey things on a semi-regular basis. As far as the music goes, though, I've never been disappointed with paying $60+ bucks for a ticket and driving for hours to get to a show. I expect good music and good entertainment. If you've been disappointed, perhaps you're expecting more than that. As far as this discussion having a point, I think it's totally valid. Type kristyciera into the referral box when you book your room!

I just feel that if I was an unsatisfied fan I would'nt bother to post and read posts and that I would have moved on by now. We cant go back to 2002 as much as some of us would like to. It aint happening!!!!

And as far as validity goes for anything you say from this point forward, I believe you just gambled it all away with that one extremely mature statement/post. To the girl/guy who just said they went to a Crowded House show and Neil Finn kept playing in spite of a shut-off, I envy you and declare that that further proves that Crowded House is one of the best damn bands ever, and the owners of one of the best songs ever written ("Don't Dream It's Over").

His voice and everything is better. He seemed to half ass the older shows because I could barely make out what he was singing before. I vaguely remember SNL doing a sketch about his singing with Jimmy Fallon saying, "blah, blah, blah," making fun of the fact that no one could understand a word out of John's mouth when he sang. His voice used to be scratchy and low, like he was not even trying. Now, when I hear recording of a concert it is just as good as the studio version. He is definitly working his ass off now to make these shows great. I thought his banter back in the day was kind of stupid so I don't understand why people miss that. I'm a pretty pretty princess!
