Blender magazine (I think??) did an article on MCC and it said he gets paid $250k for an arena show, and he took a pay cut for MCC to establish the brand, etc.
I read somewhere else (Rolling Stone maybe?) that he makes around $10M for a full summer tour. Generally the artist either pays the venue and takes a percentage of ticket sales, or a promoter pays the artist a fee for performance which can either be a set amount or a fixed plus percentage situation. (at least as far as I know).

Artists usually get royalties and percentages on album sales -- but as a musician that's not where you make your money anymore. (Back in the days of 30 million albums, maybe.) Continuum just went double platinum (2 mil) after 2 years and everyone's geeked about that sales figure.

He also earns royalties anytime a song is used -- anytime a song is covered by another artist or used in a commercial or TV show, he gets paid for it since he owns the rights to it. And let's not forget the few endorsements he's done -- Martin, Fender, VW, Blackberry. No, he's not the richest man in Hollywood by any means, but he's also not doing too badly for himself, at least it doesn't seem that way.

I would venture to guess (and that's all it is, kids, really) that he's actually fairly conservative with his money (outside of the watches and sneakers and FedEx addiction) on a macro level (in terms of huge purchases - think cars and houses) and is probably pretty well invested. My guess? If he decided to pack it all in, pick one place to live, and become "former rock star John Mayer" he could do it with a little lifestyle adjustment and probably without having to work. It doesn't seem to me that he's one of those artists who is beholden to the record company for advances on everything and ends up with $35,000 a year in take home pay.
