I am going to attempt to tape it.
I also found out that about 7 students were chosen from the Songwriting department to do this week-long thing with JM. |

Thanks a lot for taping or at least attempting to Meg (that is your name right?)! Just listened back to the first one, and it just made me really anxious to
find out what he has learned and has got to say this time around.

I'll be at the session. The general student body clinic is on Wednesday and the writing is taking place on Friday.

The students are writing with him all week and are recording on Friday. They actually get to spend a decent amount of time writing with him. One of my friends
got chosen for it.

I have no idea, I just know that she gets to write and record a song with him. I'll let you know when I hear more.

JM calling up the school and going "hey let me do a clinic" seems really strange to me. it's nice and everything and i can't wait to hear the
tape but it seems strange....
maybe he's looking for inspiriation from the college kids (and i mean that in the most non-sexual way possible) -brian

pfft
the only inspiration college kids have is the kind that smokes well into the night (i made post 200 a good one) |

Yeah now that you mentioned it. It does seems really strange that John (a musician who went to Berklee) wants to give back a little to other musicians at
Berklee. What's he thinking?

It is strange as my understanding of the way these things work is the schools/workshops/clinics call up the artist's managment and book them...It's not
like Slash gets off the road and goes "oh hey before I hit the studio lemme show the kids at Juliard how to shred on the viola"

Berklee does last minute clinics all the time. Everyone here has the connections. Lil John Roberts stopped by the other day just because he is touring with
Janet Jackson and she was supposed to do a show in Boston, until she got sick. So he just stopped by and gave an impromptu ordeal.
This kinda stuff just happens. I believe JM still has connections to some of the guitar faculty too, so I don't really see it as strange. |

I wonder what john mayer thinks about the importance of his guitar tone to compliment his vocals, as well as when he plays along with other musicians

You know what absolutely SUCKS about all this?
I have to work RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET while this is going on! Then again, I made it to the last one so I should probably just be thankful for that. |

sleepingonthesidewalk wrote:Yea. his tone matured over time, and he had a lot of different kinds of effects (ie the warmth of I Don't Trust Myself). I'm really wondering what his take on guitar tone is like. I hope someone here can give him that question for me

I can't answer it for John, but for me, finding the right tone for a song is just another technique of making a song come off sounding right. It's all
part of song writing, from finding the right tempo, the right chord progression, the right strumming pattern - it all helps express the mood/atmosphere and
feel of the song. It's part of communication, and because of the importance of passion and expression specifically in the genre of blues, the in your-face
SRV tone is really a force that pushes the music forward. This is why people on this forum (such as myself) cling to overdrive pedals which help break-up the
sound of the amp - to make the guitar squeal and cry, and assist the feel of the song. For songs like I Don't Trust Myself (With Loving You), it
wouldn't make sense to have such a crunchy tone, but rather a soft tone is comforting, perfectly suiting the lyrics of the bittersweet melody!
I said a lot without really saying anything. In fewer words, the tone of a guitar is what most guitarists wish their voice could do.
