I'm excited. John entertains us no matter what he does, so this formal variety show will only serve to bring us more of what we love anyway. John being
John. Can't wait!

I'm tired of cop/lawyer/doctor shows. I'm tired of the reality shows where they compete to lose the most weight/eat the grossest things/make the prettiest clothes. I'm tired of watching "stars" dance/attempt to dance. I hope John's show is that something new. |

They said something about a pilot, if that is the case they will do a show get a test audience and see how it does. If it makes it through that, then we may
get to see it. I am reserving judgement but I will bet ya James Smith gets a spot. I think I would have more excitement if it was on HBO or cable...CBS
just seems a bit middle of the road.
but who knows... here is a little more.... The source: http://www.tvweek.com/new...es_john_mayer_variety.php CBS is moving forward with its long-rumored John Mayer variety show, the network confirmed Wednesday. Awards veteran Ken Erlich is set to executive produce the hour while Rob Cohen ("The Big Bang Theory") is on board to write comedy sketches for the project, CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler said at the Television Critics Association press tour. Check out all of TVWeek's TCA coverage here. A backdoor pilot for the show will tape this spring, but CBS hasn't yet decided when it will air. The network will decide whether to greenlight a series after taping the pilot. "He's so smart and he's so funny," Ms. Tassler said, saying the failure of NBC's recent Rosie O'Donnell variety special didn't scare CBS from jumping into the variety game. "Oh, no," she said when asked if that program's performance frightened the network. "I mean, (it scared me) for other reasons, but no." The confirmation of Mr. Mayer's project was one of the few nuggets of news to emerge from Ms. Tassler's session with reporters at the CBS portion of winter press tour. Ms. Tassler used CBS's strong fourth-quarter performance-the network ranked first in viewers and adults 18-49-as justification for touting the viability of broadcast television. debbie

We heard back in November that John Mayer may be getting his own variety show, and it looks like the plans are forging ahead. At the TCA tour today, the Entertainment President of CBS confirmed that the network is close to finishing a deal for a music/sketch type show. Now that it's really happening, tell us - would you watch John Mayer's variety show?
Yes - I think John is so funny and entertaining! .......................................................27% (60)
No - He's way too full of himself and I don't even like his music............................66% (145)
Maybe - Will Jennifer Aniston be guest starring?.....................................................7% (16)
------------------------------------------------- ok sorry couldn't resist...obviously we would all watch it.

And even more...from the LA Times: (don't think this one was posted, sorry if it was) TCA Press Tour: CBS loves John Mayer
10:13 AM PT, Jan 14 2009
Simon Baker, move over. John Mayer is coming to your network! CBS President of Entertainment Nina Tassler confirmed today at the TCA press tour that the singer, who is as famous for the women in his life as he is for his music, is developing a variety/sketch show pilot that will air on the network sometime this year. Mayer approached CBS with his idea, and Tassler certainly responded. Mayer will write some of the sketches himself, she said. "I loved him." she said after a news conference. "He's so multi-talented. Great personality. Really smart, loves television and is very funny and has a great sense of humor about himself. " If it is successful, the project could turn into a series of specials. To that end, Tassler, asked if Rosie O'Donnell's recent live disaster on NBC scared her, replied, "Not at all. Well, for other reasons." -- Maria Elena Fernandez

Just spoke to friend who works at CBS--she said there is not universal love for the project and that there is concern about how to keep him on point, so to
speak, and how it will be received given his Q ratings are apparently quite low (or something like that). She also verified what Debbie said. It has a long way
to go before it sees light of day, but she said that if it is any good, they are likely to get it out for the May sweeps. Actually, I think she said one of the
greenlight points is that they didn't have to shovel piles of money into it (she talked so fast--I thought only us Jersey/NYC people tawk fast). And one
very funny thing. She mentioned someone blogged about him turning into the next Sonny Bono instead of the next Bono. Wasn't that someone on MSM?

A variety show would be fairly cheap to produce, I would think. And I also would think that would be a big selling point for them to do a pilot, not having to
sink a bunch of money into an unknown venture.
Thanks for the insider info, going to be interesting, that's for sure. debbie

q score | ||

WIKI: The Q Score is a way to measure the familiarity and appeal of a brand, company, celebrity, cartoon character or television show. The higher the Q Score,
the more well-known and well thought of the item or person being scored is. The Q Score is primarily used by the marketing, advertising and public relations
industries.

... to also include my opinion on the idea: I think the show will be complete shit.

I disagree.... I think it will be funny and dry and I think it will be everything we love about him. Hopefully all the quirky humor. My main concern is with
mainstream TV...I mean I guess it depends if this is late night or not but, I honestly can't see John Q Public getting this. If it is anything like the
humor that was on his TV show. I have come to the conclusion that mainstream America doesn't get dry sarcasm...Let's face it how many people actually
thought that he didn't write his own music.
Just not sure how he is going to go over. And given they are concerned with the fact that his Q score is low...that means not a lot of people even knows who he is or cares. Like I said I would have higher hopes for this if it was on Showtime or HBO... or even VH1 CBS? Just not quite sure, have to wait and see if we get a chance to view it. debbie

CBS means he has to keep it clean, unless it's on really late. Just not sure if the average joe will understand his dry humor. He is smart and smart people
tend to have humor that isn't obvious in your face. Unless of course he plans to just fart constantly and become the live version of Family Guy. Who could
be "Meg", I vote for Scotty.

I happened to flip to 92.9 Dave FM, a radio station here in Atlanta, at noon today. The theme of the show was musical artists who do other things in addition
to their music...musicians who can multitask. She mentioned JM's show on CBS as an example. She said she believes he has the "chops" to do
both. Then she said check out her blog to see JM multitasking...nice.

I would just like to add one thing: in an effort to avoid working on my thesis, I have been wasting time on the Internet, and I find myself getting very angry
at all those Mayer haters who are taking cheap shots at him for this forthcoming TV "thing."
One more douche bag remark and ... well... Reading the comments (some are very very funny) on this board is one thing because I assume we are all fans (despite some disparaging remarks about "superfans" he made at the Xmas show) and I think we are critical because a) it's the nature of the board , b) many like me fear this is just extended
writer's block and in lieu of a new CD, c) we hate to see him embarrass himself even more than the Borat suit incident, and/or d) we just don't want
to have to deal with the crap we will hear from some of our friends if he does a version of the Rosie Variety Show crash and burn.
Anyway, far better than focusing on real worries about the economic crisis and the crappy job market when/if I ever finish this damn thesis. |
