Where the light(music) is....seriously, where is it? |

I really want to hear your guys' responses on this...I need the input of avid musicians and JM fans such as myself. It seems to me, nowadays, when
I turn on the radio, I walk around in disgust at the vulgar music that's going on. First off, the musicians don't care! They want the money....after
that, notice how their album work slows? Their uncreative melodies linger behind their rushed lyrics that have no significant meaning. The solos are pretty
much just the lyrical melody...no creativity. Can anyone name a musician these days who is working as hard as John just to create beautiful music? The guys
has billions, could do anything, but he still wants nothing than to make it perfect. But he needs help....he's trying to change the world and most poeple
just say to me "John mayer? nah, hes not that good of a guitarist" ....If only we could make them watch Where the
Light Is. We, musicians, need to unite, and bring back the meaningful lyrics, thoughtful melodies, and the real reason for music......Love.

I know....but it has been very inspiring for me recently in a past song I wrote. I just feel like crying out, but instead, I just channel it through a guitar
and vocals. Very powerful stuff. I have to say, I wouldn't be the way I am or where I am if not for John Mayer. The real moment of my conception was Jan.
31, 2007, in the Pensacola Civic Center....Continuum Tour.

It's not like John Mayer is the only musician your describing out there.

You're right he's not. Thought he might have been a good example though, seeing as this is a website for John Mayer fans.....Anybody have anything
that's actually constructive to say? This is a positive post for inspiration, not negative criticisms.

What plays on the radios is, and has always been, what people listen. In the 50's it was Jerry Lee Lewis, in the 60's it was The Beatles, in the
70's it was Led Zeppelin and nowadays it's Kanye West. It's just how the musical market works. Even though, there are still very talented musicians
on the radio. Jason Mraz, Arctic Monkeys, The Killers, Radiohead, Oasis and many others. Even Kanye West has been very complimented about his last album (not
that I like it)...
You just have to be smart enough to listen to what you want, not what's on the radio. This thread actually doesn't make a lot of sense...
I'm brazilian, if you'd like to know. Sorry for any english mistakes!

Perhaps I should re-explain it. The basis was just how most of what's on the radio today sucks because not as many people put effort into it any more. Was
just wanting to share this thought with other musicians to inspire each other to keep working on the music instead of the fame. Thankfully, most of the people
who share my thoughts gather on this site.

The industry is in the business of hits. It dont matter if they're timeless or completely novel. Most of the artist you hear on the radio wont be there by
next year so dont worry. There aren't many artist that have the combination of integrity and genius. Alicia Keys is pretty up there. I'm sure most
artist are trying to make songs with great melodies and meaningful lyrics they just dont got hits or good enough songs to keep them in the mainstream. All the
shit you hear on the radio is just someone's attempt at breaking a new artist. They might have a really catchy single but they wont sell millions and wont
be here for long. Keep playing and writing music.

As a musician, it can be disheartening to listen to what's on the radio knowing that a lot it is just slapped together to get some cash, but the music
industry in the way that we know it is dying, and it's trying desperately to hang on to these last moments of relevancy. There's a lot music that's
popular that I'm not really a fan of, but sometimes I'm not looking for anything deep, thoughtful, or genius. Music has multiple purposes. It could be
to inspire, to inform, to be enjoyed, to celebrate, to mourn, to entertain and to escape. And that's what a lot of people look for - entertainment and
escapism, even if it's mindless. It's the same reason why people read bestsellers that may not be able to hold a candle to greater works.
Then there is also the artists' sides of the story. If you're mainstream, you need those songs that will sell well in order to keep afloat, and so you can continue to live. I would imagine that once you get used to a certain lifestyle or have been able to attain the lifestyle you dreamed of, you'd go to great lengths to retain it. I don't know where most of these artists and bands will end up. Everyone wants their fifteen minutes so they can prove themselves, and some people compromise more than others to stretch those fifteen minutes. Whatever the case is, do you. Everyone can't be satisfied with everything all of the time. It's a fact of life. Just try not to let it get you down and stop your quest to make beautiful, thoughtful music, alright? |

To me it all went down hill when "video killed the radio star". As soon as music videos came about, the industry was focused on making music video
songs. People got famous over night and gone were the days when the Page's and Little Waters had to play every night for years to get a following and
actually become amazing musicians. Now its just garbage like the reality show to make Girlicious for example... we got to see right from the start that they
had no talent and were fabricated and people still gobbled it up cause it's what makes money now apparently. Thats my little rant lol.

Music videos came out in 65 with The Beatles. We had a lot of good good stuff on the radios after that.

dparker wrote:I guess I just don't get this. Sure, there are lots of no-talent whats-their-name's on the radio lately with music we might not like. That doesn't mean there's no real music left. It's just how the radio industry works. bdam and Televisionary are right on it. Not everything you hear on the radio is going to be epic. If you're thinking that, you're just setting yourself up for disappointment. On the upside, recently you've got guys like Coldplay, Alicia Keys, KT Tunstall, Maroon 5 all over the radio with plenty of good stuff (just naming random bands I like that are coming out with new stuff. Insert your band/artist here.) And there's tons of awesome music that never sees the radio. Folks like Don Ross, Andy Mckee, The Afters, Tommy Emmanuel, Porcupine Tree, etc etc etc. Again, just some artists I like. And don't forget the people that have been around for a while, but still active on the music scene; Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, Jackson Browne (a personal favorite of mine,) Clapton, Satriani, whatever. It's not all bad. |

The indie scene is on fire right now.
Music is everywhere but on the radio. Music is where it really belongs, on stages. The Live scene is where it's all happening. support the local scene and you'll discover wonders. Fleet Foxes, Paper Rival, The Stills, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Plants And Animals, Blonde Redhead, Tv On The Radio, Karkwa, Thrice, Beast, The Dears, etc etc have made my day at live shows. Boycott Radio and it's dumb format, Support Live music, buy music directly from the artists , that's how you really help the scene. + It's a damn fine way to spend a friday night. thank you. Evens

Seriously, it is useless to put any stock in the radio or get angry about what's on it. Get out there and find good music, cause it's out there. Yeah, there is a lot of crap out there, but there is just as much or more good music as there ever was. It's really fun finding it. By the way, it was National Record Store Day today. Not sure if anyone knew that. It was really cool. Music is still very much alive and great. Be positive and have fun finding it. |

evens wrote: Just had to say your taste in music is awesome, I LOVE Fleet Foxes and the rest of the bands you listed are great too. I'm not sure how it is for you guys but we have a few sweet radio stations that disregard pop/hits completely, but that's for more of an alternative/indie audience, which I dig but I can see how it would be frustrating if you were after some blues. |
