basically just by making myself go every day, knowing that it will keep getting easier. my diet is pretty solid now too, it was out of control for the entire
winter basically. i miss soda, beer, burgers and chips

if anyone wants advice on building shoulder and upper arm muscles here it is: Hop around on crutches for awhile! I fractured my foot and I swear my shoulders
and upper arms have sore muscles places I didn't even realize there were muscles! =)

Joey, you gotta be careful about running every day. It's recommended (although obviously not required) to at least take a day off in between days you run.
Otherwise, it's bad for your muscles (kind of like lifting and using the same muscles 2 days in a row).

hmm, maybe i'll take today off then RY. i actually went twice yesterday, once in the early afternoon and then again around midnight last night.

t's recommended (although obviously not required) to at least take a day off in between days you run. Richard, tell that to marathoners and coaches and they'd tell you to eff off. Most runners end up having to run two or three days in a row every week. A lot of training plans have you running 4 days in a row. You just have to figure out what works for your body. I try to run no more than two days in a row because I get injured easily, but sometimes I can manage three days in a row if the middle run is very light and easy. For people who just run casually as part of a weight loss or fitness regimen, running every other day is definitely good though. I just didn't want to prevent any budding runners on the board to think two days or more in a row was necessarily bad. Oh and while running is pretty much the greatest "diet" ever, because typical runners generally can eat whatever they want (within reason) and not gain much, if any weight, I'm finding my body composition is changing. I haven't gained any weight at all, but things are much softer in places than they were before. So, I may still be burning enough calories, but my muscle is somehow disappearing and being replaced with fat. Which means I need to lift...which I kind of hate because runners don't normally have time to do anything other than run. Anyone know if push ups, crunches and planks are enough to keep some reasonable muscle? I don't need to focus on leg muscles because running hills pretty much keeps those strong...my upper body is pathetically puny though and my abs and core could use some work to keep my running form better. ~Tara |

As a marathon runner myself, including Boston under my belt, I highly recommend core exercises.

Damn, you ran Boston? I bow down to you. I don't know if I can ever run a 3:40 to qualify...before I'm 34, anyway. My goal right now is 3:50, but an
extra 10 minutes less than that just seems impossible.
P90x is tempting, but the infomercials intimidate me. ~Tara |

Ran Boston in 08. To qualify I ran a 3:34 in Houston and 3:35 in New Orleans. Drank both times two nights before each race. Highly recommended also. This all
in a three year span. I ran Boston in 4:21 - illustrative of how hard the course is. I do triathlons now. As mentioned, running can be done consecutively, but
I think you just have to be cut out for it (have the genes) or just run really slow, which is what I do now, and it becomes very tedious. The ipod is the only
thing that makes it worthwhile. I think unless you just really, really, really are in love with running, you can't do it all the time for years and years.
So, more of a mental than physical thing to me. Variety to me is key.
Tarz - I bet you could qualify. Pick a flat, well fan-based course and train on hills. I think the fans in Houston are what kept me so hyped. It never felt too hard with all the encouragement. p90x is tough, no doubt. But, the results are amazing. I wear a heart rate monitor which computes calories based on hr during each of these workouts. I burn at least 400-500 calories each time. The abs are killer, but only 15 minutes. Each week you repeat workouts and can totally see your progress. |

A 3:34 in Houston? That's freaking awesome. I ran the Lincoln marathon in 4:06 last year and was shooting for 4, but the leg cramps in the last 3 miles
kind of ended that dream!
And Holly, if that's the case, I've been pregnant for over a year and am not showing yet! ~Tara |

you've got to cut out the fat -- even the good fat -- for a week or so of detox. then add the good fat only back into your diet. i'm
a girl so i don't know if this next part will work for you, but i eat complex carbs before lifting -- strawberries, blueberries and raspberries. then
within 45 minutes of lifting be sure to have lean protein. it has worked very well for me so far. good luck!

they're getting there!
anyone have tips on how to work abs while doing pullups? i bought one of those gnarly pull up bars so i wind up doing a metric shit ton of them every day. is there a disadvantage to doing 40+ pullups a day? |
|||
nomadnomad7 |
|||

i don't think they're really a disadvantage alex but i wouldn't do a bunch of pull ups 2 days in a row. if you're gonna kill your lats like
that give them a day to rebuild just like you would with any other muscle group.

i've been running/walking every other day for the past week or so now. the combo of asthma and hating it make it hard, but i gotta stick with it. gonna try
to throw in some push-ups and sit-ups on the off days. the NBA playoffs have severly cut down on me doing anything lately and there is still a month and a half
left

I'm sure I'm going to regret posting this online, but this is where I'm at now. I wish I had a before picture to show the amount of fat I've cut off of my stomach. My scrawny ass managed to get lovehandles, somehow. My abs still aren't where I want them to be, but they're getting there. I've really put a lot of muscle on my triceps / biceps but you
can't really tell from the picture..
Basically I need some tips on how I start bulking up without putting fat over my abs.. I've had to cut my cardio because I do'nt want to start
losing muscle.
Give me some tips on where I go from here!

alex, you look great, man. don't obsess over it. pay attention to your nutrition, keep working out steadily and you'll get there. try high intensity
interval training for cardio a couple of times a week.
