I was working out at the gym and reading the TV monitor when the president was speaking. He was trying to display a sense of calm and tell everyone to wash their hands, blah blah blah, it was just like any other flu. Scrolling on the screen below, I am reading that they were increasing the pandemic alert level, school closings, and deaths attributed to the flu. I want facts, demographics, and statistics. The government knows a lot more than they are letting us know (as usual). The facts behind the 23 month old that died in Houston change every time I here a report on it. I live in Houston and it is on the news non-stop. Last I heard, the toddler and family visited relatives in Brownsville, traveled to Houston, and was heading back to Brownsville when he got sick. The Brownsville hospital Life flighted him to Texas Children's in Houston, where he died. This would mean that he possibly was exposed to the flu in Houston. If they can trace back to the first person that got the flu, they know more than they are telling us. I know they don't want to start a full blown panic in the U.S. Tena B.... Go Big or Go Home!

I don't think this is that big of a deal if you're healthy. So you get the flu, take care of yourself and get better. The only difference seems to be that this is easier to catch than any other flu as humans have no exposure. I'm just looking at the positive side of all of this. The weirdos are only going to be more explicitly noticeable. A lady that lives down the street from me was wearing one of those stupid masks in Whole Foods. I'm staying away from her at the next block party.

Here's the email he sent my aunt this morning after she emailed him asking about it: "I'm still not sold on the seriousness of this swine flu "pandemic". They declared a pandemic had arisen from a swine flu in 1976 and nothing happened. And I'm sure you remember the whole SARS hysteria... nothing there either. The fact is that there are hundreds of those viruses and bacteria that pop-up every year and look to be devastating, then fade into nothing, and we never even hear about them. The waterless hand sanitizers are OK, but all they amount to is alcohol. There are viruses, as well as bacteria for that matter, that have an extra outer covering, called an envelope, that protect them from just such substances. There is still nothing that can replace good ole' fashion handwashing with a strong liquid soap, and warm to hot water. And don't ever dry your hands with a towel, always use paper towels or something disposable, so you're not picking up something from the person that came before you. I wouldn't worry about somebody coughing around you having swine flu just yet. I don't see this strain being particularly deadly either. Even though they are calling it "Swine" based on its outer markers, it is an H1N1 subtype, which means it is the relatively minor version that humans see every year."

More likely all the newly discovered cases are just that - newly discovered. I take issue with only one point in your friend's advice, Jennifer - from an environmental standpoint. If it's a home environment over which you have some control, don't use paper towels. Just assign each family member a particular handtowel per day or every couple days, and then throw them in with your laundry. Whenever one of the yermamas gets a cold, flu, etc. we all start using our individual handtowels by the kitchen sink - where we most often do the hand washing. If it's more than family in the home, put out the 100% recycled paper towels.
