I hate to judge a song before it is released, but the new song ( Who says I can't get stoned) to me sounds a little cheesy and juvenile. I know I probably
shouldn't have watched the video but I always held Mayer up to a little higher standards. I can't say I'm thrilled about him writing a song with
the title talking about getting stoned. Besides the music is just way to similar to Stop This Train. Same key. Same rhythm. Some of the chord changes are
similar. I just hope a song like Taking on Water doesn't gets bumped off the new record for this song. Taking on Water is like no other Mayer song
lyrically and musically.

well, you definitely judged it before it was released. and actually you saying that he shouldn't write a song about getting stoned plays into his song
about people telling him he can't get stoned. He also has the same rhythm in heart of life, half step down and he made that sound different didn't he?
Damn people, trust the man or at least say it sucks when it is officially .mp3.

luv2fret, do not say you shouldn't have watched the video. You did nothing wrong. Just because John Mayer asked an audience to not record anything does not
mean they have to listen. If the Hotel Cafe didn't have a policy agaisnt it or didn't catch someone, that's on them. I'm so sick of people
saying they feel bad for watching this video. Are we really afraid to do something John Mayer doesn't want us to do?
And there's nothing wrong with judging a song from what you hear now. You instantly judge everything you see and hear. Your perceptions and opinions can change over time and they will change dramatically when you hear the final track. I don't like the song much either right now. It's okay, but nothing great yet. Feel bad about not helping someone when you could have or not giving more of yourself than you could have. Do not feel bad about watching a YouTube video of an artist you love, no matter where it came from. |

Erich, Heart of life is a different situation all together. The fact that Heart of Life is tuned down half a step makes it way different than Stop this Train I agree. But Heart of Life is a way stronger song than Untitled Stoned song. Besides good songs should be able to be shine through even just being played solo acoustic. Songs like Stoned song and Heartbreak Warfare shouldn't have to rely on studio production to pull them out of blandness, if they do it means they are fundamentally not that interesting. As far as lyrics and melody and chords go, Heartbreak Warfare is one of the least interesting songs I've ever heard from Mayer. I think a lot of his unreleased songs like Lifelines or The Hurt or even Sucker completely blow Heartbreak out of the water. |
