The whole song is figurative and not literal but alot of people wouldn't know that.

just found this:
Who says I can't get stoned Turn off the lights and the telephone Me in my house alone Who says I can't get stoned Who says I can't be free From all of the things I used to be Re-write my history Who says I can't be free It's been a long night in New York City It's been a long night in Baton Rouge I don't remember you looking any better But then again I don't remember you Who says I can't get stoned Call up a girl that I used to know Fake love for an hour or so Who says I can't get stoned Who says I can't take time And meet all the girls in the counter line We don't think to send a sign Who says I can't take time It's been a long night in New York City It's been a long night in Austin, too I don't remember you looking any better But then again I don't remember you Who says I can't get stoned Plan a trip to Japan alone Doesn't matter if I even go Who says I can't get stoned It's been a long night in New York City It's been a long time since 22 I don't remember you looking any better But then again I don't remember you |

Pretty sure the lyrics are:
Who says I can't take time And meet all the girls in the county line Wait on fate to send a sign (as opposed to we dont think to send a sign. ) Who says I can't take time edited to add i found another discrepancy. i think its county line. what the hell would counter line mean? like, at the grocery store?

Graham, I heard the same lyrics as you...counter line makes me think of Dairy Queen. County line somehow makes me think of a correctional institutions inmate
line up....regardless love the song.

If you're a guy, singing meet all the girls in the county line seems so perfect. I really love this song, and that verse caps it off.
I see what u mean about the county inmates, but I think it's really about going out and having a good time mingling without any ties. in the words of Matthew McCohonghay, I get older, they stay the same age lol so wrong and creepy but classic line from Dazed and Confused

This song is my favorite still of new material, BUT he really really needs to change the key. It's too similar to stop this train. Same strumming
progression AND even in the same key.
I also think this song has incredible lyrics, I like this much better than the almost emo heartbreak warfare lyrics. It's definitely got to be county line too. Perfect phrase, love it love it.

It may have similar key, progression and what not (dont really know what they are but it IS similar to Stop This Train) but having those same elements makes
the song what it is, it draws on the atmosphere that playing stop this train creates. I think he was wise to do that and any changes may ruin what the song is.
my opinion if he changes it and it sounds badass ill change my opinion

oh .. ok. thanks. not loving this song. Its a little immature for where he's been.. and where the rest of his songs seem to be going. and it does have a
similar chord structure Stop This Train.

The more i listen to it the more i like it...sometimes you have to listen to a song a few times before you really start to like it...at least thats how some
songs are with me

I'm not loving this song either. I can't wait to see if it actually makes it on the album.

then after that you go looking for others opinions, listen to the song a few more times and change your opinion based on everyone else Nope I don't think that is the case at all. Maybe for you, but for me? Sometimes I can listen to a new album and know which songs I gravitate to right away and sometimes, there are some I just don't like much. But on a second third or fourth listening? I might have missed some subtle nuances and they hit me differently. And as far as other people's opinions go? Most of the albums I listen to, there isn't anyone around to say nay or yay, so all my opinion. I don't read reviews, I don't search them out, after all what do I care what anyone else says. Music is very personal. And yes sometimes with a few songs you are right. I disliked Daughters at first listen and I still dislike it. The only time I thought it had possibilities is when Brad Paisley sang it and it just seemed perfect for a country song. Still didn't like it, but I got where it could work. I think another thing, about John's work especially, is the way he changes things up. To tell you the truth, I only listen to the produced album a few times and then put it away, by that time the tour is out and I listen to the live stuff. It is always much better, but again my opinion. I may not like the produced album version of a song, but I might love what he does with it live. So my opinion of a song changes again. I think that is his biggest appeal with John, at least to those who go for the music. debbie there came a moment in the middle of the song when he suddenly felt
every heartbeat in the room & after that he never forgot he was part of something much bigger...Brian Andres
