Hello there, why dont you try Cait's stickied thread about info? Its the collection of best discussions on JM gear topics like this.
Well I can only say those tones are probably just cranked Two Rocks or Dumbles. |

he uses different pedals for the same songs on many occassions..it all depends on the time period he was playing the song and what OD/effects he was using at
the time. why do you want to know?
this has been discussed numerous times about just about every song he has performed live so if you dig around I am sure you will find it if you are looking for specifics.

I'm planning to buy an OD, right now I'm using xotic AC and BB preamp.
I'd like to know what OD I could buy to be close to the sound of songs I mentioned above. Do you know when he's using the boss BD2, the Katana or the TS808, in the live album WTLI or in Try ? |

Keeley BD-2 for Try (the song), I'm almost sure.
TS-808 for the Gravity solo.
I'm brazilian, if you'd like to know. Sorry for any english mistakes!

During the Trio's first tour he was using a TS808, the Keeley BD-2, and the Katana. For a more gritty, transparent overdrive, thats the BD-2. You'll
hear that on Good Love is On the Way.
For the song Try, I usually saw him using his Gibson ES-335, so that gave it that thicker tone. I'm thinking if he had an overdrive pedal on for that song, it would have been the 808, but I can't be sure. For I Dont Need No Doctor, you'll have to be specific about which performance you're talking about, because he's been playing that one for a long time with different setups and tones. For Who Did You Think I Was, I always use my Keeley BD-2, or if Im using the 808 I'll turn the tone knob up a lot because you dont want that song to sound muddy. Lots of individual notes and the need to be articulate on it. For Bold As Love from Continuum, you could use a lot of different things for that solo tone. I get really close with my TS808, but I could see it being a fuzz pedal as well with the volume knob on the guitar backed off. Basically it just needs the neck pickup on a strat and then some sort of overdriven tone. Bottom line, you can't go wrong with the tube screamer style of pedal (TS808, TS9, TS10, Fulltone Fulldrive, etc.) for a lot of Mayer tones. The Keeley BD-2 is also fantastic for his stuff. Those will cover a lot of bases. He has been using the TS10 a lot lately in his performances and thats what he's using on WTLI for most overdrive tones. |

Tone Driver wrote:Can you tell me what are the differences between teh Boss BD2 and the TS808 ? What brings the Katana to the clean sound of the Two-rock amp ? |

The TS808 and BD-2 are very different types of overdrive. The TS808 is that classic tube screamer sound like Stevie Ray Vaughan and others. It is a thicker
sound, more mid-rangey.
The BD-2 is very transparent, meaning that you'll always hear a lot of your guitar through it. It's more of a gritty sound. They are both really great pedals. I have had them both for several years now and still don't really look for overdrives because they really take care of me. Individually they are great, and also running them both on at the same time is great because you combine their strengths together into an awesome overdirve sound. By the way, make sure you get Keeley's version of the BD-2. You'll be fine with either the stock TS808 or Keeley's version. I have both and actually use my stock one more these days. Both fantastic. The Katana will just give you a thicker, more powerful clean tone. If you feel you need a clean boost, its a good one. I had the Katana for a while but it just wasnt necessary for my use. |

Don't forget, he also uses a TS-10, and he's been using it more and more as time goes on. Tomo told me that John said his favorite OD is the TS-10
hands down. I personally hear a very big difference between a TS-808 and a TS-10, but many think they're almost the same pedal. In all honesty, a TS-808 or
10 or any other similar OD are all going to sound pretty damn similar, especially on lower end amps. It's been said countless times, but the majority of
the tone that you're probably searching for is coming from his Two-Rocks and his Dumble. I use a TS-10 on my Two-Rock Classic Reverb and you can get
John's identical tone.

I don't think the Katana is worth those 200 dollars, btw. But it's just my opinion.
And TD, I still think that it's the BD-2 for Try. He uses the 335 for Come When I Call and it doesn't sound as distorted as Try. He could also be using the Katana to get his amps distorted.

the 335 is higher output than a strat, so it may push an OD pedal a little more, giving it a bit more grit.

gobnew wrote:You have a Two Rock and you're STILL searching for John's tone? You probably aren't going to find what you're looking for in an OD pedal in that case. You probably need to get the most important part of your tone developed: your fingers. What kind of Two Rock do you have? Honestly, I could put a horrible OD into my Classic Reverb and it would still sound damn close to John's tone. |
