Suggestions, thoughts on External Recording Units (Multi-Track Recorders) |

Whatup playas? Quick question I'd like to discuss here. What is a good external unit for multi-track recording? I'm looking to be pointed in the right
direction, as I don't have any experience with them. I'd like a unit that wouldn't be too hard to transport between my bedroom, garage, gig, etc.
Maybe 8 tracks of recording. Nothing too fancy, just somehing that I can plug some mics into and capture some sessions. I've been looking at units like the
Portastudios and stuff like that. Just wantin to help getting in the right direction. Any experience, thoughts, or suggestions about external (I'm using
the word external to mean "not with a computer software") recording would be helpful. Thanks a lot.

Are you looking for a machine that will be able to record 8 tracks at once, so 8 mic i/p? Or 2 is fine as well? And what's your budget?

4 simultaneous would be my preference, but 2 would be ok I suppose. I'd like to stay around $500 for my budget, but I'm a person that if I need to
spend 600-700 for a much better machine, I'll do it. Just looking for a good bang for buck piece that will give me good options.
I've been looking at items like the Fostex MR-16HD, Boss BR-600, etc. |

It seems like you just want to capture what your doing and not really make a record or demo...do i would say just get a field recorder..like a olympus
ls-10..which actually sound pretty good..it'll do you good...

Actually I am interested in being able to make a decent demo.

Do you want to be able to hook it up to your computer and do multitrack editing too? Do you have a laptop that you can use to record to when you're playing
live, or do you want a standalone unit that doesn't require a computer?

I think I would prefer the ability to hook up to computer for further editing and burning to disc.

I haven't got any experience with multitrack hdd recorders, except for the alesis hd24's, but that's different. You'll definitely will be able
to make a decent demo with 4 i/p and the ability to mix 8 or 16 tracks. Recording and mixing on a small machine, like the one you're looking for, can be
very interesting compared to recording on a computer, as you don't see the music you're making but really have to use your ears. You can see it as
recording to tape. JM said something about this once. This is a nice article to read about that Jack Johnson about Recording
