Two pop icons pass: Jackson and Farah |
Lead | |
|
Waiting for details. But Reuters says he passed in the hospital. Between he and Farrah Fawcett, that is two pop icons gone in one day. Hoping this
isn't something that comes in 3's....

Ed McMahon makes the three. Three legends in just a few days.

I'm still in shock... The AP, LA Times and CBS news have all confirmed Michael Jackson died. CNN still unconfirmed. Just when you don't want to think
it does, it really seems to happen in threes...

6 million copies Watching CNN and in the midst of reporters waxing enthusiastically about Michael's music genius, Jeffrey Toobin finally tempers it with reminders about his molestation case. It will be interesting how this milestone is spun by the media. And now CNN's Brian Oxman is yelling about allegations that Jackson has been perpetually drugged in the name of keeping the upcoming tour on track. It's going to be a circus. And you're right McMahon was #1, Farah #2 and now Jackson #3. AND the topless photos of Jackson with wife Lisa Marie Presley that CNN is showing are freaking me out.

Loved them both. RIP Still remember the amazing energy in the Hartford Civic Center when I saw MJ live during the Thriller tour. I was up in one of the sky
boxes and had to use binoculars to see him, but Billy Jean was fucking stupendous.

I came here to see what my music friends had to say about this and hardly a word. Thank God for you, Holly! Anyway, I can't believe this has really
happened. I'm curious what the scene looks like in Japan right now. Personally, I feel like my childhood is slipping away bit by bit. My Dad and I used to
dance to Thriller in the living room and I remember so clearly the evening that the television stations were taken over to show Black and White. What a sad and
lonely life he had despite his legions of fans. We were lucky to have his talent, but unfortunate in that we could never understand him.

my best friend and I used to unfold the Thriller album, prop it up on her dresser (because he reclined the length of the jacket and that's just how we had
to have it) and play that record over and over again. and we'd take turns holding the sleeve with all the words until we finally knew every word to every
song.
what's sad is that when I have kids I'm sure they'll love Michael Jackson, but it won't mean the same as it does to us. they won't have the same experience we did. and whoever that person will be for their generation will probably be some awful madonna headset-wearing auto-tuned twit. it simultaneously breaks and warms my heart that despite his own troubled life he managed to bring so much joy to mine.

Tonight I talked to my boyfriend ... 5 years younger than I ... and unaffected by MJ's death. A few minutes later I talked to my mom who compared him to
Elvis. If you don't feel something today, I'm convinced there's a little piece of your heart that never fully formed. To say that my childhood is
slipping away is the understatement of the century. I didn't cry today, but I think it's because I don't believe it's real. Maybe that's
how they felt when Elvis died, or when John Lennon died. Either way, I don't care. My memories of Michael Jackson will never, ever include his quirks,
his black-to-white transition, his behavior that no one understood ... what it will include is my first-ever 45 of "Man in the Mirror" and how much I
adored watching every video he created on my parent's living room television.
Rest in peace, Michael Jackson. There will never be another you. |

I've always been wondering, how much it must hurt, when some of my favorite artists dies. Now I know what it really feels like. It's absolutely heartbreaking - and MJ was the greatest for me, greater than JM. R.I.P. Michael Jackson. |

I was thinking last night how strange it must be for his friends- or even for his contemporaries - to witness his passing. I mean, I would never think that Liz
Taylor would outlive MJ. What is Macauley thinking? How about Brooke Shields and Lisa Marie? I know Corey Feldman was on TV last night talking about it and he
was showing some sunglasses MJ gave him from the Victory tour.
In terms of contemporaries, Madonna issued a statement, but that must be bizarre for her since they both broke into this insane level of stardom around the same time. No one was as big as the two of them worldwide (since the Beatles). funny how Madonna is only marginally off. Perhaps the only difference in their sanity levels is the fact that one was made into a child star and the other propelled themselves into the spotlight after entering adulthood. |

What's so crazy about this is just how fast the news spread. I mean, the second the news hit...it was like the whole world knew. I've never seen
anything quite like it my lifetime.
My fondest MJ memory was when I was 3 years old. I will never forget it. I was with my dad and my uncle and Friday Night Videos (anyone remember that show) aired the "Thriller" video and I was scared out of my mind. I was noticeably flustered and begging my father for intervention, to which he replied, "I am calling them up right now and asking them to take this off" (which later I found out never happened--Thanks Dad). I remember being so conflicted between not watching at all or watching and being scared. I opted more for the latter because it captured my attention unlike anything else had in my young life. It's definitely 1 of my oldest and fondest childhood memories. I slept with the lights on that night for sure. MJ reminds me of Marilyn Monroe in 1 major way (outside of them both dying young). They both shined in the spotlight, but were completely different people outside of it. If MJ was in that spotlight...he became almost unhuman like in the way that he could captivate massive audiences and he was hitting out of the park at 11 years old. He was charismatic, he was charming, he vocally was in a different universe and his dancing was not only great, but it was innovative. Almost even a first of its kind. His melodies were unique and he was fresh in every way possible. He has inspired a LOT of musicians (and I know for a fact that 1 of those musicians is the guy who this very message board was started after). But when he wasn't on stage...he was a different guy. He was shy, he was socially awkward, he was completely stripped of a normal childhood and he had many other oddities about him...some that were public and true and some he may have been falsely accused for being involved with. Love Michael Jackson or hate him, the 1 thing that can't be denied was his immense amount of talent. I think there are very few people (unless they're crazy) that didn't respect him as an artist. Having spent quite a bit of time on Twitter last night...I saw musicians from all different spectrums (far far removed from modern "pop" music) paying their respects to the "King Of Pop." It was very cool to see. I truly don't believe we will ever see a new worldwide sensation as big or as talented as the Michael Jackson. He was a musical legend and we now live in an era where new music legends just aren't being born. His music, love or hate him, WILL live on. There's not a doubt in my mind. |

I'm sorry for all of you who's lives and childhoods have now been dramatically changed, but I can't separate the man from his actions and therefore
can't separate the music from the man from his actions. Every time a clip is played where he is grabbing is privates, there's some kid/person is
therapy cringing and trying to come to terms with what jackson did or tried to do to him.

So the media is saying that MJ is not the father, Debbie Rowe is not the mother and MJ never legally adopted the kids. Hmmmmm??? This is going to be quite the
custody circus.
What really rubbed me the wrong way is when MJ's dad and Al Sharpton had a press conference and started promoting himself. Pretty distasteful in my opinion. |

Brett, I think a LOT of people see it your way too. He was just...deranged. Crazy.
Saw him in 1987. Think it was then. The Bad tour. Fabulous. Sheryl Crow was one of his backup singers. Probably one of the best concerts I've ever seen. Top five for sure. |

Bill Simmons (espn.com writer) brought up the interesting point the other day that for the past ten years you heard very little about MJ and his impact on
music and how big of fans everyone was, but the day he dies suddenly people have all kinds of stories about how they were raised listening to his music and
watching his videos and how their lives were impacted by him.
I semi-agree with his point after having many discussions with my brother about how we remember watching the making of Thriller, the Thriller video, and Moonwalker on VH1 on Saturday mornings with our Dad, and how we taped the Black & White video and watched it all the time. I agree he's one of the best artists we've ever seen and has gone forgotten in recent memory because of his odd personality/lifestyle, but if someone asked me my favorite artists I probably wouldn't mention him or even think to. |

I cannot believe Michael Jackson didn't legally adopt his kids. How in the hell did that not get done?
