I didn't see the original video Blue, you pulled it before I had a chance. I don't blame you for wanting the clean and warm tone in an amp, and I'm not going to sit here and tell you how to spend your money... and I think that 'worthiness' is a poor argument. You're @ Berklee, so you've got to have some chops.
You're 100% right, gear - especially the amp selection makes a ton of difference in tone. Its in your fingers, sure - but its still got get boosted and come out of a speaker at some point, and there's a pretty simple reason that great amps cost $$$. If I had the disposable income - I'd be farting around with boutique amps and higher end gear - I can guarantee it. And really - I could care less if I'm worthy in someone else's eyes when I do it. And you've got it right - take care of the big pieces first.
I can't believe so many people on a John Mayer board so readily tear into each other about tone, or blast a guy trying to get that magic chime (or point out how others might get there). John sure as hell isn't the first guy to like the clean channel... and despite all the criticism of others who try - I'm pretty sure that he's not going to be the last. I really don't get the protectiveness. Like any other player worthy of looking up to - he's just a guy that's pays attention and is good at what he loves.

Wow I just saw the thread... I totally admire Blue's playing. Though I didn't see the first vid, still I can say the geartone is right on but I can
hear the finger difference. Basically John's fingers sound ahhm stronger? Anyway I SEE how it plays part on John's tone.

it sound like JM when you hear the video is moot anyway, he'd have to push the power tubes hard enough that the laptop mic wouldn't be able to take it
to get JM sounds. Either way, it does sound similar as far as ampage goes. Seasoned listeners and gear guys can often separate the effect of
amp/player/guitar/pickup and you can tell the amp is very ''modern JM.''

Good ears. The master was at about 12 o'clock. It if was cranked any more it caused the video to clip.

I will say that I've seen you progress a good amount in a short time. Nice work. In terms of tone though, I don't think it's there. And that was
the point of my first post; I think a Two Rock plays that big of a part in John's tone.

Yeah. I was going to do the looping through the Bassman and solo through the BJ (cause the bass track I did with the Pog sounded better through it) but the mic
wouldn't pick it up evenly.

Hi I'm new to this forum, but I was browsing around looking for Classic Reverb clips and stumbled upon this thread.
Oddly enough, I recorded my very own video for kicks a few months ago. This is my cover using an Ampeg J12t which is about as opposite a tube amp as the two rock as you can get. your playing is good, but I will say the closest thing to a TR would be something like a Super Reverb or any of the '65 reissues. close for an ampeg,
