Which Version of Little Wing is best? |
Lead | |
|
I just finished watching this legends of classic rock show with my dad at B.B Kings Blues club here in nyc. The show was awesome, the lead guitarist was this
guy named Geoffrey Townsend who played jimi, srv, clapton, zep, and a bunch of other things, all of it sounding exactly the same as the actual artist, it was
insane. Anyway, he played Clapton's version of Little Wing which left me a bit dissapointed. Its an alright version, but I feel like the SRV version is
by far the best, it seems to just have more emotion in it. So the question is, whos version of little wing do you think is best and why? You don't
necessarily have to choose between those three, it can be anyone's version. I know Steve Vai has a pretty good one out there too.

I'd choose Hendrix' version, or SRV's. I think Hendrix' is still my favorite, the vocals are really beautiful.
I'm brazilian, if you'd like to know. Sorry for any english mistakes!

I gotta say I favor SRV's version. That might be the most emotion I have felt via a song.

The SRV cover has always been my favorite, but there's something so raw & beautiful about that Hendrix "Little Wing Jam" from the late
60's in NY. All of those people in attendance probably had no idea how lucky they would consider themselves to have been there.

I love SRV's instrumental version, BUT, you just can't beat the original... so beautiful, yet so short--almost too short. Like someone said above, the
lyrics are beautiful, and the kicker for me is the sound of the bells in the background. I LOVE the bells!! I think Stevie's is extremely soulful and
emotional, but it seems as if Jimi says just as much in 1/4 of the time. Absolute magic.

SRV for sure. His tone on that is what I strive for. Thats what a Strat should sound like.

I would go with SRV, but I totally agree with Drew that there is always something special about Hendrix original. The lyrics are really beautiful.
And also, I want to ask which SRV version most of you are referring to. The regular studio version? My favorite is the one from the 3 disc box set, the one where he goes right into Third Stone from the Sun. The tone from that one is incredible. |

SRV hands down. You don't needs words to tell a story.
Close your eyes and listen to the whole thing and you can feel what Stevie feels when he's playing, and it's incredible. just a guy named john |

Dude, in that SRV video above, do you not see how freakin huge his hands are? Geez. I've been watching him for years but it still boggles my mind. Also,
his tone.

My favorite is the original Hendrix. Not only does it have a beautiful gloss to the sound but it has this sort of boyish charm. I don't know how to
describe it, it always brings a smile to my face. SRV's is technically insane though, however, it remains a cover... he was probably covering it since he
learned to play guitar. Not that any of that matters... Just gotta give props to Hendrix for writing it.

I gotta say +1 for the Monte Montgomery version. The most amazing guitar work and an incredibly original interpretation. Could someone please tab that one
out?

So after watching SRV live at the El Mocambo I ask myself where did this come from? I have the DVD and there's no Little Wing on it. Some of the YouTube
comments indicate you can buy it but I did a check and the El Mocambo DVD still doesn't inclued Little Wing. So anybody know where this came from?

Alex98 wrote:Thats what makes me love Hendrix so much. I used to not like him that much because his voice use to really throw me off. Once I got into playing guitar I fell in love with his style then I realized how awesome a writer he was. Now when I think about Hendrix thats what makes me appreciate him the most. I mean come on, dude wrote Little Wing, Bold As Love, Have You Ever Been, Wind Cries Mary, Voodoo Chile, and Castles Made Of Sand. He has more classics within three albums than most get in a lifetime. Like just to think where your brain had to be to write an intro like the one to Little Wing. I know after he wrote that he was probably like, "I'm the shit". Back to the matter though. Does anyone know what amp SRV played Little Wing through? It must be the SSS cause that thing is dynamic as shit. Its really true how in very well made high end amps picking harder or softer doesn't just change the volume, it changes the tone. I know my Marshall don't do that. |
