Choice: Proto or TBO |

If you had the option to spend the money for a new guitar and had these two (or you already had money down on one) as the two choices, which would you pick? my
mother informed me today that I have to choose between the two. I totally understand that you just can't shell out about 5k for both, but I hadn't
really given it much thought until now.

Whichever I felt more of a connection with. For me, I would go with the Proto. I personally like to keep my own identity when it comes to a guitar I buy. So if
it's too recognizable, it's hard to keep identity and make it your own. I wouldn't buy a guitar that I wouldnt feel comfortable playing onstage
with, and I wouldnt feel comfortable playing onstage with the Black One.
The Proto is a great combination of paying homage to Hendrix, SRV, and Mayer along with being able to have my own identity with it. Just my thoughts on how I look at guitars. |

i think i'd choose based on the sound and feel of each guitar. play both and just pick from there. in terms of how they look?? i'd be much less worried
about that as i would be how they sound and feel in my hands. if i were going on look alone, i'd pick the proto because i think buying a purposely reliced
guitar is just asinine. beat your own guitar up so you have the stories for down the road. i'll always know the dent right next to where my strap attaches
was from the first time i stuck my strap on and dropped the guitar onto the edge of my piano bench. 14 years later, i still check both ends of the strap before
i put my guitar on.

What is a proto? Is it a Hendrix type of strat with reverse headstock? I guess i'd go for that one.....the black one is johns guitar, I wouldn't feel
comfy playing another mans guitar.

what a nice dilemma to be in leet...i don't think you can make a bad choice..but seeing as you already have a black one replica, why not grab the proto and
not TBO.
Have you thought about not getting another guitar and moving up to a better amp (two rock jet combo??). I know its off topic but you have so many high quality guitars and although the blues junior is great (i love mine)...why not forgo another piece of gear that will only be played occasionally and move up to an amp that will match the quality of your guitars?

I think if I had 5k to throw around I'd choose neither of these two guitars, but as this is your choice You might want to sit and play
both for a while to see how they feel. If you are going to use these guitars to gig with you want to be sure you love the sound. And bring your amp to the
store. That way you'll hear the tone through your own gear and it gives you a point of reference to judge the overall sound by. Some say the proto is a
bit harder to play with heavier strings because of the high 'e' going to the shorter tuning peg (wouldn't know myself cause I've never played
one but just though I'd pass that along). As an investment the proto will probably, in the end, be worth more. Lastly, and most importantly, you got a
great mom to buy you one of these instruments.....

After thinking about it, why don't you get a new amp? Find someting like a Tony Bruno or something similar that has a killer sound.

^I honestly did. these last few weeks have been insane. I JUST got back from gigging the 4th of July parade we played. we had a flatbed and truck that we used.
it was fun. we play then again tonight for the fireworks party. set is:
National Anthem (Me, solo. did it with my wah, sounding out the words. I love that thing!) House is Rockin You really got me (not my choice. other guitarist wanted to do it.) 6-String Dialoge (Original tune, written by me and our other guitarist. picture it like this, "A blues man and a metal head sit together on a plane" and the song is how the conversation plays out. ) Waiting (Original tune) This Side Down (Original tune) Look at Little Sister Crossroads (Encore) I'm going to need some rest after today! |
