Generally it takes each person actually trying to look at it from the other person's side, no matter how "right" you think you are.

Being "right" isn't much consolation when you are all alone at night.

Even though you may not agree with how they feel about something, it's still the way they feel, and it helps to try to get why.

Then you are more able to try to find a compromise that can work for both of you, or sometimes you will actually realize that you do need to change something, or they will come to that realization.

I'd give you an example from our relationship but I've got to go corral kiddies now.
