buddy's tone is like that because of the way he plays. Meaning, if he plays an aggressive lick with the volume full up, the tone will just be super bright. i forgot the term for that tone. Otherwise, he'll roll off on the volume.

but yea, i prob can't stand playing with that tone constantly haha

Yeah, true true. He has a midboost controller 0-25dB in his Customshop guitar with polka dots which this is the same Eric Clapton have in his.. On EC crossroads 2007 he had a very very bright tone, which is sad to me, because I know how nice his tone can be.. I'll blame the honeyblonde guitar he is using now.. hehe nevertheless if you want some good BG tone examples, you should have a listen to this cover of Red House on the DVD called "Lightning in a bottle" : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GfPgTo-vAAM and this one, from Santana presents the blues, live at montreux: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKo0FK6-O-E I just love it when he has this particular tone and he even manage to hold his tones for decades... by the way, Steve Jordan is the musical director on "Lightning in a bottle"
