Without a doubt to make a G chord an E you need to move up 4.5 steps or 9 half steps (therefore 9th fret capo), but I believe the question was "how does John play it?" I have seen the set list and he plays 3x5 after it. It is the 8th fret on the video. If you just play the video in high quality and count the frets you can see it is on 8. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I believe the answer to the question posed is fret 8 with the chord progression listed above. To play it in the original key, you need the capo on the 9th fret. Either way is correct, and one way may sound better than the other depending on your voice, but John plays it with capo on 8.
