if you wanna be a touring musician i'm attempted to say theory won't get you a job - you just have to play (and sound!) good, look good (depends on where you wanna play) be a nice, reliable and uncomplicated person and you've got to meet the right people at the right time (networking is EVERYTHING!). further you need good equipment that survives rough roadies and trailers.
as a studio musician instead i think there's a certain need of proving (!) your theoretical knowledge - at least every once in a while.
"i don't have any care at all about being famous or getting on the radio or selling records. i would be perfectly content just playing a few gigs a week at local restaurants or bars to make some spending money - i'm not in a position yet where i need to worry about supporting myself or a family in the "real world" so to speak."
i think when you do your music for a living it definietly should be your goal to become as successful as you can. perhaps you don't need to feed a family right NOW, but it won't be satisfying for you to chuck up beeing a musician because suddenly there's a wife and a child and you can't foot the bills anymore because you always just played "a few gigs at a local bar" and were cool with it.
in the end you shouldn't wrack your brain too much about how to get a professional.
if you've got it, it'll happen. if not, it won't. you just need to know what you wanna do and set yourself a deadline. otherwise you're still chasing your dreams when you're 40, strongly believing someday you'll get the call that'll change your life.
hope it helps.
i hope the slips in the grammar aren't too bad.
