I don't know if it works different in the US because its so much bigger compared to the UK but I was the same as you, bedroom player for about 4 years while i went through school (we finish school at 16 here) then i went off to college to study music for 2 years because I wanted to be around musicians and learn from them, Near the end of the 2nd year of college a woman came in to one of the singers asking her to do a charity gig for free, 40 min set and she wanted a motown style band. So the singer got a few of us together and we just played, We had brass, drums, Guitar, Bass and the singer with some of us doing backing vocals. I had never got payed for a gig and didn't think I would for this but after we played It was to 500+ people, we filled the rest of our year with at least 2 bookings a month and we didn't know how much to charge so we just said about 300, 50 each between 7 of us which was ok I was only 18
My best advice Is just to do a cover band, and try do something that isnt being done round your area if you are looking for some good money, I did the whole motown thing and it worked well because in Liverpool there were no decent motown bands, especially all at the age of 18, after the 2 years of gigging we eneded up bumping the price upto 1500 each gig as the set grew and we had weddings and functions twice a month, but people in bands are idiots sometimes and the good thing doesn't last.....
But once you play one gig, you can useually get a few gigs off each one and you end up with
I didn't mean to tell you my life story here, just give you an idea of how it can get started and what it can build too, I was lucky there were a ton of guitarists at the college and I just tried hard and was noticed,
But Liverpool is tiny compared to most of the American city's so it works on a different scale
And I wouldn't of classed myself as professional, I had an awful amp, OK guitar and no effects but by the end of it I felt I am much more professional from the experience
