Yeah I know that all these slow 12 bar songs are similar, but you mostly compare guitarists from different generations who were inspired by another one (like JM and Clapton), while JM and JB are at the same age (or almost). So my point is not whether its plagiarsm etc, but if you don't think that melody- and lick-wise these two songs are more similar (which of course may be a result of their similar influences) than, for example, in the case of the songs mentioned by StratLovesLenny.

EDIT: haha, t9 got the right idea^^^

Yeah I definitely see where you're coming from though. I don't think the songs are more alike than any of the others mentioned though, and if they are, it's not because of their age or influences. Blues Deluxe is a cover that Joe Bonamassa did, and I think Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart were playing the song before John Mayer was even born, haha. I don't believe that Jeff Beck had a very large Hendrix influence about him at that time either... However, I do think the songs are similar in terms of structure (solo intro, verses, great solo, prolific song exit), which, imo, makes them both great! Even if they're nothing new.

To me, if any songs are similar, it's Red House and Out of My Mind. Obvious Hendrix influence there in lyrics (one and one-half days/steps), melody, licks, and all of the above. I'm almost convinced that Mayer just started singing other lyrics over Red House, and that's how he "wrote" Out of My Mind.

Influence.
