I feel many of your points are well taken. You present"The Hurt" as coming from a guy who has a generous heart and has been basically trampled on. I get that "The Hurt" could just be a fantasy about what COULD occur as opposed to an actual occurence (sp?) . It is interesting to how we have more understanding or empathy for why people behave certain ways when we fully appreciate the circumstances they may be in, at the time.so,thank you for your explanation....and I still have couple of concerns RE this song. One I have already mentioned and the other is the verse "I want to fall, fall asleep in the arms of a woman; a woman who does not deserve my love." For me, it means a woman who is not up to his standards of what he is looking for in a partner, or something like that. Does anyone else have a different take on this line? For me, this is an arrogant comment. Everyone, deserves our love, though maybe not in the way he is referring to in the song. It's the same sort of problem I have with the verse, "I don't remember you looking any better, but, then again, I don't remember you. " Isn't that like BSing someone in the first part of the verse and then slapping them in the face in the second?

Ah, but, this is but one song and one verse. JM has written so many touching, beautiful songs which have given me hours of enjoyment and I am most grateful to him for it. Just like the rest of us, I believe JM is a mixed bag. Many of his songs speak of his sweet caring heart and his sensitivity <----which can be a double edged sword, AND according to you Cremallero, might be the motivations BEHIND "The Hurt".
I always assumed he was talking to himself in that line...
Especially the way they filmed it in the video.
