polyester is definitely thicker than polyutherane and is a resin finish i believe. sanding either it down is always an option but should be your last resort as it will take a lot of hard work and time. the best way to remove either is with a heat gun and a paint scraper. it will still take a few hours to do, probably about three, but it will still be much easier and shorter than if you were to sand the finish off. typically when someone refers to "poly," they mean polyurethane or polyester. the term is used interchangeably for both as far as i know
