Part TWO from Local-83

Quid Pro Quo II
6.10.2003

With the Summer tour quickly approaching and a tight schedule of recording and rehearsing, John & Scotty took a break from the action to pontificate over their favorite things about being out on the road. See you out there!

Scotty: Coolest backstage scene you've ever witnessed?
JM: Wow... What a letdown the truth would be... You used to run around in a speedo and giant woodshop style glasses. That's what sticks in my mind.

John: If Customs officials were to stop and search you at the airport, what would they find that they might embarrass you?
Scotty: Hair glitter and lip gloss.
JM: porno DVDs without their cases.

Scotty: If you could choose the music to be played on the PA before each show, what would you play to get everyone in the mood?
JM: I think Miles Davis is the perfect ear cleanser between bands.
Scotty: I remember that Chad tried to use, with much coaxing by me, 'NSYNC's "Celebrity" one night in November. I think we made it through two tracks before a tech changed the disc.

John: Craziest story/excuse you've heard of someone trying to get tickets or backstages passes to a show?
Scotty: Well, there's an unlimited supply of I Drove An Amazing Amount of Hours to Get Here and No Seriously I Love John Mayer stories - the best thing I've seen, though, is droves of girls begging to have their underwear signed.

Scotty: Wildest thing you've witnessed or experienced while on-stage - ever been electrocuted?
JM: Well, Scotty, no. Simply because that means I would have died. You
Almost sound like someone else wrote your questions for you. Craziest thing I ever experienced on stage was in Atlanta, where Guster came out in makeshift John Mayer tee shirt diapers and stayed out there past "funny" and into "uncomfortable", which we all know is VERY funny.

John: The song that fans sing-along to live that always sounds best?
Scotty: I remember when we were in clubs, I could get a sense of how good the crowd was from the "got me in trouble..." line in My Stupid Mouth. The way that high note sounds ("trou") when everyone hits it is just delightful. "Why Georgia" is another one.

Scotty: The song you love to jam and go off to in Sound Check with the band?
JM: I used to love playing City Love at sound checks. Towards the end of last year nothing worked anymore.

John: Favorite thing to do on the tour bus on a long ride between gigs?
Scotty: Ummm... sleep? I try read when I can, but I have to hide in the back lounge so you won't make fun of me. But really, there's just Ron Eubanks and Halo.

Scotty: The establishment that we most prefer to pit stop at for food, relief etc...
JM: I like the truck stops. I like a good Applebee's or Friday's meal. Keeps a young man rooted in his past.
Scotty: I love a good truck stop - ones with hats and shirts and belt buckles and dolls and cassette tapes.

John: If it existed, which drive-thru window would you frequent the most while out on the road.
Scotty: Some place to get airbrushed t-shirts - you know, the type that you can only find in places like Key West, FL and the Bahamas.

Scotty: First Car/ Dream Car?
JM: First car was a Plymouth Voyager that belonged to my mom. Dream car? My penis is far too big to get into that stuff. But hey, I'm not gonna lie. Music's been good to me. I rock the quarter to eight.
Scotty: First car was a 1966 Oldsmobile Cutlass. It was BIG. Dream car is an Escalade with enough cargo space to carry my Z4. (Hello, what GOes in CARgo space?)

John: Favorite roadtrip of all time?
Scotty: I took a month-long roadtrip with Francois (The FFF for you RJ buffs) to see the midwest and northeast for the first time. It was structured around the Dave Matthews Band-Ben Harper-Ozomatli tour and is to date one of the best things I've ever done. I came home with 35 rolls of film and a best friend. I feel like I just signed someone's yearbook. Stay cool thru tha summer, K.I.T.
JM: Favorite road trip? My first tour ever, with Glen Phillips. I was green and he was a great mentor. I also remember some spectacular drives. What a good guy Glen is.

Scotty: Essential music for a road trip - CD's that are a permanent fixture?
JM: I take Ben Folds Five "Whatever and Ever Amen", Jeff Buckley's "Grace", D'Angelo "Voodoo", A bunch of Police, Stevie Wonder, Stevie Ray Vaughan, etc...
Scotty: That's a hard one, especially with my dependence on the iPod. Umm - OutKast's "Aquemini", 'NSYNC's "No Strings Attached", "The Best of Huey Lewis and the News", DMB's "Before These Crowded Streets," and G. Love's "Philadelphonic" are all front-to-back good discs to drive to.

John: Funniest bumper sticker that you've ever seen?
Scotty: Something like "Don't Steal - the Government Hates Competition" got me one day. Not that I agree, I just found it ludicrous. One thing that bugs me is when people's bumper stickers are crooked - there's no legitimate explanation.
JM: Good Sam, I have no idea. I'm so off my game with the wit right now... Deconstructing myself at the moment for this new CD. I'm hoping to be back online with the humor and personality by summer.
