johnmayer: In the years since I began working with veterans via an organization known as NCIRE (www.ncire.org) I have had the great honor to meet with returning combat vets and hear their stories. No two people or experiences are exactly the same, but the fundamental message is clear: respect them and show care, but do not pity them. Say "thank you for your service" but do not discuss politics. Employers, hire them. Support veterans initiatives, and understand that their experiences are those of incredibly strong willed and intelligent people, and that many of the challenges they face are unavoidable. One thing that isn't unavoidable, however, is that we can continue to foster a culture of acknowledgement, of continued care and unbiased respect and support of their reintegration into civilian life, and a sense of duty to their well being as they have made it their duty to protect ours. Thank you to all veterans and their families for your service to this country.
