WELCOME!! We hope you like the new version of MSM.
With the redesign of the site, we figured it would be a good time to revamp the board rules, too. Special thanks to Elias Stein for the awesome redesign, Trish Badger for the JM photo gracing our banner, and Silk Icons by famfamfam for many of the new icons on our pages.
Please read below for the rules and answers to some frequently asked questions. See the post immediately after this one for some additional links and throwbacks.
The history and life of this board influence the rules that follow. My Stupid Mouth was started on April 12, 2001, after Richard attended his first JM show. Richard had listened to John’s music since 2000, when John had his own forums on CoolBoard, but they were shut down in the spring of ’01 and the official Sony BBS began. That switch propelled MSM forward.
Nine years later, what started as a fun, small way to contribute to the John Mayer community has now become the largest online fan forum for discussion of John’s music. Over the last almost-decade, the vibe here has gone through many changes. The original members and JM fans were incredibly knowledgeable and equally sarcastic, often leading to a ‘war’ between veterans and new posters. While most of those posters have moved on, either to the Non John Mayer side or other sites & musicians, some remain to try to keep the history alive.
RichardYoung [moderates all forums]. Richard = founder & the original Midwest Ambassador.
Jocelyn2003 [moderates all forums]. Jocelyn = Eddie’s era fan with a ridiculous memory for details.
smithcor [moderates all forums]. Corey = longtime fan and poster with a penchant for east coast concerts.
graham [moderates all forums]. Marshall = a fan of sarcasm & parody photos.
nomadnomad7 [moderates all forums]. Joey = somewhat elusive resident stud.
toddiceton [moderates all forums]. Todd = elusive world traveler who still makes an occasional appearance.
marlow [moderates the Musicians Forum]. John = music-minded poster.
caitsings [moderates the Musicians Forum]. Cait = frequent concert attendee & music-minded poster.
Every album, interview, or large shift in John’s world brings with it a slight changing of the tides here – more new posters come in, and those that once considered themselves newbies may assert a veteran position. Many veteran posters maintain friendships with each other outside the confines of the board.
With that in mind, the rules of the forum follow. We’re a privately run board, but we keep an eye on things constantly.
The focus of this board is John Mayer’s music. Please refrain from speculation on John’s personal life, unless it’s something published by a legitimate source. John’s obviously in the press more these days for non-music related things and we understand that, but like VH1 used to say, we’re trying to keep it MUSIC FIRST.
Lurk before you post. Are you the kind of person that dives right into a frigid pool before testing the waters with your pinky toe? Don’t do that here. Read around to get a feel for our environment before you make your first post.
Silly details about John aren’t thread-worthy. Threads discussing John’s sneakers, parachute pants, or underwear choices are completely unnecessary. People aren’t genuinely interested in these topics, but if you find such things absolutely necessary to share, please post them in The Random JMc Thread: http://johnmayer.yuku.com/topic/370
Have a sense of humor. It’s just the internet.
Be respectful. Yup, it’s just the internet, but behind every post, there’s a person typing. Disagreement and differences of opinion are ok and expected, but it is NOT ok to attack someone personally. As a general rule, wit, sarcasm, and jokes do not constitute personal attacks.
 Housekeeping is awesome. Please
help us keep the board organized and easily readable. Some things to keep the board flowing freely:
[a] USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION! The basic search button is helpful, but the advanced search button is even better. Please search through threads before starting one of your own. If a thread already exists on your topic, or is slightly related to your topic, make your post in that thread. We’ll merge duplicate threads whenever they occur.
[b] Proper grammar is fantastic. This is the internet and it’s not an English course, but we appreciate full sentences and/or complete words.
[c] Hijacking is not cool. If a thread starts on topic X, please keep it that way. Conversations have twists, turns and tangents and that’s fine, but please don’t turn a thread into your own personal conversation with board members. There’s Facebook chat, gchat, Twitter and even AIM for that.
 Post in the appropriate forum.
Spammers can shove it. Spamming is completely unacceptable. We’ll close your thread, mock you, and ban
you – the trifecta of the internet, if you will.
If you don’t follow the rules, there may be consequences. Again, this is a private board, but we reserve the right to close, edit, or delete your thread if it violates the above rules. If you do something exceptionally wrong, we reserve the right to ban you. THESE THINGS RARELY HAPPEN because we pride ourselves on keeping discussions open and free, but it’s something to keep in mind.
If you see something, say something. Taking a cue from the NYC transit geniuses, if you see someone breaking the more serious rules, please let us know via private message. Before inundating our inboxes, wait a few hours to see if we take care of it on our own, as we do have full-time educational and/or professional pursuits outside of MSM.
One person, one username. Aliases are not allowed.
 Trolling will
not be tolerated. This includes posting off-topic or nonsense messages
in a thread, or inciting conflict for no reason. For further clarification, please read this to see what constitutes trolling.
The internet never dies and everyone can read what you post. See: http://www.archive.org.
