fenderman wrote:"XO" is a strategy. He is wanting his next record to do better. It is going to take time to write and record that album, so for now he is releasing a cover. A good cover that gets people's attentions, reminds them of his talent and hits with a wide demographic. I am sure his new management sat down with him and worked out a game plan for his next couple years. This is getting more talk than his breakup, which is kind of the whole point. Remind people he is a musician, good even with other people's material. Being proud that something you put your there did well is alright. I think if nothing else it will inspire him to make an album that he is proud of and is commercially successful.

Seems a bit odd to pat yourself on the back for a cover of the biggest name in the game. If Walt Grace or Dear Marie were on that list, that's something to celebrate. But for me it would show that in order for John to rock a chart these days, he has to do a "Love Who You Love" PR blitz or a cover of a huge name. If he wants hits, he just needs to do a pop album. He just can't have it all regardless of what he does. He can't flee the world and rule it at the same time, although I truly think deep down that's what he's been wanting to do. I guess I'm looking at the bigger picture. Yeah if you're just looking at this one song and the fact that it made some waves, then ok I guess.

You're a Mayer fan on a Mayer message board, so it's not you that I'm directing my point at. You didn't need Beyonce's name attached to it to check it out. Most of the general population would and did, however.
