The blues Jr is a piece of crap amp, it's THE most overrated amp and I have yet to see glorious clips of this amp posted. Sure Mayer can make it sound good, but I'm sure that one was modded to no end. You're much better off spending your money on a better amp than guitar, period.

jmsdiabrrocks wrote:So if you want an amp...end of discussion I would get the Ampeg JVT 15 watter if I was in your situation. It's far and away better than a blues Jr. IMO of course but let the videos speak for themselves. I've owned both amps...I'd pay double for the Ampeg if I had to compared to the blues Jr. This is equivalent to a Fender Princeton http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMfubI3QwCw http://www.youtube.com/wa...CGMtmGG0&feature=related I sadly believe that most people refuse to buy non-fender products in their early stages as a Mayer fan but these Ampegs will get you a bank for the buck for sure

StratLovesLenny wrote:Yes, there are a few types of Blues Juniors. I'll give my opinion of each: Black Tolex BJ: Good starter amp, but will definitely leave more to be desired as far as sound is concerned. Kind of empty and cold sounding if that makes sense. NOS Tweed Blues Junior: Sounded warmer than the black one. A little muddy for my tastes when I tried it, but I only played it for a few minutes so it's hard to say. Hot Rod Blues Junior: I played a cream/brown one, and it was really, really great for a starter amp. Sounded a little strident at times, but that could be fixed through EQ I think. Best of the bunch IMO. Next step up from here would be a Fender Princeton or Deluxe Reverbe Reissue. There are other versions of the BJ such as the special editions or the Pro Guitar Shop special edition with the Cannabis Rex speaker. I can't comment on these since I've never played them. Heard good things about the Cannabis Rex version though. Hope this helps a little. Also, were you referring to the Hot Rod BJ when you said "deluxe?"

StratLovesLenny wrote:OH okay. Well Hot Rod Deluxe (HRD) amps are also pretty good. I've played them a few times and they produce a good sound to my ear. Although, I don't know if they're any good cranked since I usually try to be considerate of others if I'm perusing a music shop. If you search John Mayer Tomo Fujita on YouTube, there should be clips of them playing at Berklee in a classroom. That's all done on a HRD. Not bad! haha
