I also agree that this album is way underrated. "Thriller" is definitely the quintessential MJ record, but this record is underappreciated for sure (I'm surprised how many people have never heard it in it's entirety). There's more of an R&B/funk influence on "Off the Wall" and the arrangements are just more fuller (lots of strings and horns). "Thriller" is more of the pop crossover record.

You should check out the new EP Ryan released yesterday (you can get it on amazon or itunes), it's got a couple new songs, some redone old songs from various albums and a cover of Alice In Chains' "Down In A Hole". Now that's something I'd like to hear! Funny story about Ryan that I know I've told before, but it makes me chuckle. I had the good fortune to have VIP/backstage access to the very first Austin City Limits Festival a few years back and got to meet him briefly. I was watching Shawn Colvin from the side of the Chevrolet stage and see him sitting indian-style on the floor behind us (in full corduroy, in the blazing TX sun), so we waited until after her set and got a chance to chat with him when he got up. I was asking him what he thought about Bono and The Corrs covering "When the Stars Go Blue" and this was his retelling (to the best of my recollection): RA: Yeah, so get this - I was in Best Buy or Circuit City, some place where they had tvs playing all sorts of stuff, and from behind me I hear that song, but it's not me singing. So I turn around and see them there, singing my song and I just stared blankly at the screen. Me: You didn't know they were going to do it? RA: No, that was the first time I'd heard anything about it. So I'm standing there and the sales guy asks if I'm ok, and I say, 'hey man, they're playing my song!' The sales guy nods his head and goes, 'yeah man, that's what they all say'. And I go 'no man, I'm serious, they're playing MY song! I wrote that!' It was hilarious, the way he told the story - he had us all rolling. Needless to say, he didn't seem terribly pleased about the cover.

I know a lot of people don't like him because he can be moody/all over the place, etc. To me, I kind of appreciate it because I know that when I go to his shows, I'm going to have absolutely no idea what's going to happen. I've seen him jump into the crowd, make a circle and run around singing. I've seen him stop songs in the middle only to completely re-do them. He's just totally unpredictable, but I appreciate how real he is. I'd definitely like to speak to him sometime, seems like a real interesting guy. Not to mention, I think he's honestly one of the best singer-songwriter's of our generation.....I am AMAZED at how many great songs he's written, I could listen to him for days.
