I read similar sentiments in the reviews for his Dallas show this week. Ryan played at SMU in their tiny little theater and everyone has been raving about it. great recap on Frontburner (local blog) with notes about how everyone walks on eggshells at his shows these days. and it has a link to the bittorrent for that particular show if any of you are interested. back on the subject of this thread, I've been listening to this over and over again lately... The World Is Full of People Who Want to Hurt You by Salim Nourallah Salim is totally under-appreciated local artist here - he should be ridiculously famous by now. I don't get it. He has a MySpace page, but it's blocked at work. I'm sure it's just myspace.com/salimnourallah, but you might have to look around for it. and this is his website.

I went to Cincinnati and he was playing at Bogart's (which if you're unfamiliar, it's a pretty small venue). He was playing mostly large theatres for the tour, but this is like a 1,000 person club. Outside behind the venue is where they park the busses and they don't have any security back there. I had to give it a shot. So I went back there and sure enough, he came out. I got my "Heartbreaker" cd cover signed. We even talked about Mayer (due to the living connection between JM, Ryan and Rufus Wainwright). It was one of my favorite nights ever. He was actually extremely cool and not what most have claimed him to be (though maybe it was just a good night).

I've had the reverse experiences though, where you see this charismatic performer onstage or screen who is dull as dishwater and/or completely uncomfortable in smaller settings. but then again, I'm not famous, so I'm not sure how I would react to that kind of attention. this reminds me that 2 years ago last month I ran into Don Henley in my office building. he was holding a nearly-dead squirrel. it was quite the story - I wrote it all down as soon as I got back to my desk because it was so bizarre. nevermind that I had a full-on dork seizure when I realized (AFTER talking to him for at least 2 or 3 minutes about directions to another office) who he was. he was super nice, by the way. probably surprised that someone my age knew who he was (I was 28 at the time, but y'all know I look way younger). I blathered on and ON about how my Mom played the Eagles almost everyday of my childhood and how I knew the words to Heartache Tonight before I knew my ABCs. it was so lame. I was so lame, I mean. he was not lame. the squirrel was weird, but he was perfectly friendly. agian, back on track - Singular Girl by the Old 97s

"Lay Low" - My Morning Jacket (I gotta admit, I'm not some huge fan of these guys but one of my buddies really likes them. When I found out they were replacing Ed Ved at Bridge School, I immediately asked him for some suggestions and he gave me a bunch of stuff. I'm really digging them, wish I paid attention a bit earlier but I'm looking forward to seeing them this weekend.)

My favourites from the Australian music industry awards last night: "Lost And Running", Powderfinger with the Sydney Gospel Choir; "Funky Tonight", John Butler Trio with special guest Keith Urban (cameo appearance by Nicole); "Learnalilgivinalovin", Gotye. Gotye is a fantastic singer/drummer (hellooo Stewart Copeland) who recreates the diverse samples heard on his records with a small orchestra. Check out Hearts A Mess at his MySpace page. Finally, what's not to like about a poignant, funny, homicidal Frenchie maniac? "I'll Kill Her", SoKo. Oh, and I'm listening to Michael Jackson too. Three contemporaneous listeners a comeback makes!

Reminds me of the fairytale. There are a lot of briliant songs on this record: "The dress looks nice on you", "To be alone with you" and "Size too small". The songs are more or less quiet, but very beautiful, and Sufjan shows again and again that he is a good songwriter and a brilliant musician.

He never did live up to his early promise (or father, or brother-in-law, or name, for that matter). Silke - yes, Michael Penn is the brother of Sean (and husband of Aimee Mann). I think you'd like him. He was big in rural Australia c. 1989 and March was the first Compact Disc we owned. He's such an underrated songwriter (see: Try "watch me blink and overlook what I undertake"). ETA No Myth, the first single from March. I love you Cia.
