keep me where the light is...

ohhhh where the light is....

people are good

but they want to get better

and it's always in the trying that they lose their way

trying to read the book

letter by letter

but it's hard to when you're turning to an empty page

everybody wants to be just a handful of things

everybody wants to be

EVERYBODY

just needs a handful of things

everybody's good

everybody wants to be understood

everybody wants a knock at their door

comin to see what it's for

everybody wants a knock on their door from their friends saying, what are you doin? let's go somewhere, let's do something...

everybody wants to be needed

EVERYBODY

and everybody, everybody, everybody, and i mean all

hates feeling small

and when it happens they will behave in a way that is completely unlike themselves

they will become the opposite of themselves

they will become somebody that you have to read through

and stare into their heart

because when people get hurt

when people feel small

when people get embarrassed, humiliated, made to feel like they don't matter

they will change their ways, their claws will come out

and they will be somebody you don't like

but if you can have the eyes to see it

and see through it

and see the heart underneath it

and say wow, that must suck, to feel like that person

if you can have the compassion to look at another person and go

that person is not comfortable in this room, or with these four walls around them

i bet it would be different if i just happen to sit down with that person

and tell them

it doesn't matter how they feel right now, they can just let it all go

because every single person in the world needs the same six or seven things

and when you figure that out, you can float through this world

and meet everybody

and learn their names

and get better from talkin to 'em

and you can depower and disarm and take away everybody's hurt

and everybody's just..tension

and say hey, it sucks, it sucks to have to be around this many other people

i know that most people would rather be watching this at home

there's somebody taller than you in front of you.

keep your family where the light is

keep your neighbors where the light is

keep stage right, stage left, the band on stage where the light is....
