i have been going on for about a year now trying to find an in-between jm/srv type of tone. obviously there is a lot of other stuff besides effects and gear
that go into tone (fingers, picking attack, type of picks, strings, how you pick the string, etc). i started listening to guys like srv, jm, and clapton when
i started playing guitar, so i try to use similar licks and have some real hard pick attacks. i have definitely noticed that besides his clean tones, jm's
od tones are more sustaining rather than tones like clapton's woman tone. it does have its grittiness to it, but very smooth. i feel that i have come
somewhat close to that sort of tone. i found the trick is to turn your preamp up to the point of slight breakup, then use the od's to push it to breakup
and sustain. i love od's and ive bought quite a few of em, but unfortunately i trade in or sell my others to experiment with new ones. ill list my gear
and settings down below.
jm strat- usually keep elixirs or jack devol 10s on it. usually have neck/mid tone knob at 6-7 and mid/bridge at 8-9 and volume in the 6-8 range
fender blues jr nos (soon to have 25w cel. greenback)- rev: 3-4 master vol: 6-7 mids: 6 bass: 9.5 treb: 6-7 volume/preamp: 8-9 (that volume is the key to breakup)
amp>mxr carbon copy>fulldrive 2>bd2>keeley katana>boss tu 2 and a adrenalinn 3 sitting off to the side. definitely invest in a dc brick
carbon copy- mix at 9-10 oclock regen at 9 oclock delay at 9ish oclock
fulldrive- vol at 11ish oclock tone at 10-11 oclock switched to vintage switched to mosfet od at 1 oclock
bd2- vol at 10 oclock tone at 10-11 oclock drive at 11 oclock
katana- button in at 5
i like to use my fulldrive for rhythm if i need lots of smooth od. then for leads or solos i push it with the bd2. jm parallels ods. the carbon copy stays on 70% of the time. i use the katana for clean boost or sometimes i pull the knob out and use it for od boost.
