From what I have been able to surmise about John, he seems like a guy who has to keep busy. He doesn't seem like a guy who would be comfortable doing nothing. I also see him as someone who has to prove over and over again he can do a lot of different things....almost I'll prove it to you attitude, so I can prove it to myself. And while I am psychoanalysing the guy, I would bet money on his being a bit obsessive compulsive. He seems to delve into things with an everything or nothing attitude, learning everything he can about a thing, doing everything he can and then moving on to something else when he gets what he wants out of it. I have a bit of experience with this sort of personality. I could be dead wrong, but it seems to fit, from what I have seen and read. I am sure, he is writing, I am sure music is just as important as always,...I just think we have to wait and see on this.... I have been into the guys music for so long and honestly has he ever really disappointed? I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt and hope he is having a good time. Certainly better than bitching and moaning. Oh and do I think he sold out? No. I think he's still wandering around trying to find out what he truly wants..... and isn't he lucky he can do that. Ya know he has been plugging away at music a long time, he is never going to abandon it. It is in his blood. Is it really right to assume that this show will make him a sell out? I mean if it sucks and is not innovative, it won't last. As a fan, I feel like it's OK to encourage him to try and then judge. I would be so sad, as would a lot of folks, if he would have chickened out and not tried his blues stint. Give him the benefit of the doubt. It may never have occured to many people that John Mayer is his own worst critic(many of you know this well). I believe no one will be writing and re-writing the variety show more than JM. I am sure he won't ever feel like it's "done" until it's aired and over. This is a lot different than his music in that he can re-create and tweak songs in his live format on tours forever. This show is a tremendous amount of pressure I am sure. Let's not make the man crazy with negative threads. If it sucks, then we will go wild, don't you worry about that. He can write songs. He can sing (I still can't get his vocals on "In the Wee Small Hours" out of my head.). That stuff is what comes first, and none of it is lacking. He also can host a cruise. He does charity work. He's done tv before and it was funny. He's a successful multi-tasker. Here's where I worry... I'm afraid CBS may have too many "rules" and "guidelines" and "creative suggestions" that may taint the show. I wonder how much John will have to change to satisfy the bosses. If John's allowed to do HIS thing, I think it'll be fine. But if it's John minus 35%, then it might not work. I've read waaaaaay too many stories about musicians/actors/writers walking away unhappy because someone else was controlling their album/movie/book.

So first off-I am fully in support of seeing him entertain in this capacity(tv[although I think you tire me makes a valid point about the network potentially seizing too much control]). What makes this venture 'unpure', ellioup? What makes anything else he does 'pure'? I imagine you're thinking that unless he sticks with music; it's 'unpure'. But I shouldn't assume. Additionally, you(and we) have NO CLUE what he'd be able to do or how much time a certain project takes out of his day. Further, how can we even know he's completely ready to start an album this second. I realize he was planning on spending some good time from now until April(minus Mayercraft) working on the album, but plans change. Who are you to complain about that? Maybe the album would suck or not be as good as it possibly could be if he doesn't do this show or have something else to do. You wouldn't want that on your hands, would you? And we know John above all has a commitment to us, his fans, and wouldn't come out with anything but the best work he possibly could. Just trust the guy with his own life a little, geez. This is a VARIETY TV SHOW. it's like american idol, america's got talent, and so you think you can dance. John said he never wanted to become an actor but this is somewhat getting close. There's a huge difference. We all want him to be who we like him best as, but there's only one John Mayer. We choose to be fans and we take what we get; there isn't much more we can do from there. I agree, the idea of a variety show sounds cheesy and ridiculous for someone who is respected in the music community like John is. You didn't see Robert Cray making a variety show when Clapton took him under his wing 20 years ago. These are different times. Celebrity status gives those people the opportunity to do anything they want really, regardless how bad they are at it. John enjoys comedy and obviously can conceive some funny crap (i.e. John Mayer Has a TV Show), so I have hope for this project, but I fully expect it to be a let-down. Either way, I understand your frustration, I just thought it could've been put in the thread for the show itself and not just a random cry to get attention. That's all I was complaining about. Chances are the show won't even make it past the pilot. If CBS thinks this has a shot then they will put money in it. But normally a pilot is paid for and financed by someone else...and then pitched to CBS. I just think of all the shows that tank. I can't see a variety show making it unless he does another version of the Gong Show. Now that I could see making it. The stupider the better, Network TV is just brainless. I am sure he is grateful for you trying to save him....just like we all are trying to save him, must feel good that so many of us are that interested in his welfare that we harp on him daily. But to tell you the truth, I think he might have lost points in the serious musician camp when he started to be spread across all the tabloids. Somehow I can't see this hurting him anymore than being Jen's boytoy. Clapton had drugs, John has tabloids and TV... not sure which one is actually worse. I think at least the drugs might have been fun... at least in the beginning. I write this all with tongue firmly planted in my cheek.
