Posts: 8521 (06/16/2009 9:56 AM) We sleep walk in Hollywood Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	how can we grade songs that aren't even finished yet? the continued over-analysis of everything drives me up the effin walls. just let the man work and feel fortunate that he plays these random shows. most artists don't play anything from their new album until a single comes or the album actually releases. feel fortunate we're getting what we are, don't give something a C when the only version you've heard is him with a guitar. i'm fine with discussing the new songs, but grading them just kinda puts it over the top for me. last time i took a test, the teacher didn't grade it before I was finished. let the man finish his work and then give out your grades. It's just a way of expressing what I think about the work-in-progress versions of the songs that I have heard so far. I know that he's still working on it and I know that there are some songs that I don't love right now that I will end up loving (probably most of them), so I'm not judging the record here.

I think John likes to have feedback, which MIGHT be why he does the secret shows. Sure, he gets to test them out in front of an audience, but then he can google around to see who likes what. 2. OF COURSE the songs aren't finished. I think EVERYONE gets that. I was basing my opinion on the recordings currently out there. I wasn't grading an ALBUM, just the songs... as they are... so far... in my opinion.

Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	i think the only song in this scenario that is deserving of a grade so far is the hurt. it's the only one we've heard consistently enough to know what the finished product might sound like in the studio. and even that i'm not sure i agree with because how do we know that song doesn't have a whole life of its own in a studio recording somewhere?? i also think grading these songs when you haven't heard them in person is complete crap. i'm not saying only people who go to these secret shows have the proper tools to talk about these songs, but when you've got one crappy youtube video taken on some cell phone camera to go by...?? sorry. i'll wait for a decent recording of these at least before i form an opinion. makes my posts more tolerable for you moles, eh?? These are songs in progress and besides on the off chance that he is even reading here, which I highly doubt ...just like with the Rolling Stones review ALSO OF A WORK IN PROGRESS, and his reaction to that little grading so to speak? I think what you are all doing is jumping the gun and not in a very supportive way. Give the man a chance to develop before you give him your 2 cents or your B+'s I doubt very much that the man wants a critique of his work with a grade???? at this point on time. Just seems so grammar school to me. I think he takes these out for test runs because he wants to play and see how they sound outside of a studio situation. It's not like he passes out pieces of paper for the audience to grade them. Right now they are snippets and thoughts, not fully realized pieces and I just hear that bashing in Rolling Stone and think, we have no right to grade a snippet. Tell him you likes one or the other, hell, tell each other, because I can guarantee he doesn't read this board 24/7. If I would have given them all As and Bs, things would have been different. And like I said, it was just my opinion of the songs... as they are.. so far. Using grades was just a way to show which ones I liked better than the others. To say that I'm not being supportive is really unfair. And honestly, I think he respects his fans' opinions more than you think. I didn't slam YOUR opinion: "I guess I am in the minority here, I can live with that. These are both raw versions. I probably change my mind when the production kicks in or I hear it when they get more involved. But I love War of Life. Love the lyrics. He seems to be struggling with a movement in his life, a growing up so to speak and I think those lyrics are really poignant. Friends Lovers or Nothing is just a bit sing/songy for me, again work in progress so I will wait. Not growing on me yet,,,however I love the outro." Yes, you backtracked and said you might change your mind later, but basically you were saying you didn't like one of his songs. How is that any different than my opinion? I don't get it. When Rolling Stone graded Heartbreak Warfare you had no problem with it what so ever, and now you're completely against grading new song? EDIT: Posting at the same time. Very nice.

As far as I am concerned, that holds it up to a standard...I presume an A+ for you. I think just the act of attaching a number over an opinion, shoves it up a level. And a level on a snippet is not fair to him. Sure I backtracked on my opinion, this made me think what I was saying was wrong and a bit jump the gun, I thought about the Rolling Stone article, which to all extent and purposes was my fault. ... and I toned it down to express that. I can change my mind. The grading made me think I was judging before it was done, and how wrong it all seemed to me.. and I would rather give the man the benefit of the doubt right now. I will wait and see how these turn out. I don't number women or men with 10 - 0 and I don't do it with songs, because songs change as you might need them. Sure there are a few that don't, ones I flat out do not like but as a whole what could be an A+ today might be a B tomorrow in your grading criteria. personally being a teacher and knowing a C is average. I would wager a bet that I would think none of Mayer's songs would ever be average. Even the ones I dislike with a passion. Just not my cup of tea, but hardly worth a C grade. Opinions are like assholes, everyone has them, I get to have mine and I get to think that maybe it was too harsh and I changed it,,, This made me think and that is never a bad thing. If I were John, using common sense here, I just wouldn't want my fans to grade a paper or a test, like Moles said, before it was finished. debbie edited to say, no your grading didn't bother me in the least if you had given them all B's I would have felt the same. It wasn't what you gave them that made me think it was the act of holding them up to a standard without them being finished. Oh and one more thing. I didn't slam your opinion, just the grading if you would have numbered them 1-whatever number one being the one you like best and whatever the one you like least??? Touche. But there's a difference between a magazine doing something to get readers, and make money, and someone on a message board semi-dedicated to that artist. I'm sure most of it is because the process of making this album has been so open with the blog, Twitter, and these shows; it gives us more to analyze than we've ever had in the past.
