Posts: 10 (03/22/2009 2:34 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Tags : None Hi, I'm all new to the electric thing...been playing acoustic many years, but now it's time for something new:-) I bought a stratocaster and a fender deluxe reverb. How can I get the clean sound as JM(....and a lot of other artists) on songs like " Another kind of green, Everyday I have the blues, Bold as love etc. Does Mayer use pedals for that sound except the his Two Rock's? Is a keeley katana boost useful for that?

Posts: 1196 (03/22/2009 2:53 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	clean should be as easy as plugging in your guitar straight to the amp... to get mayer's clean you need a two rock and his hands, but you will get close with your deluxe. turn the bass up to 12, the mids down to like 6 or so, and the treble at about 10. see how that works, and adjust from there. ---So here goes: close your eyes, get out of your own way, and JAM.---

Posts: 2061 (03/22/2009 3:30 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	the one thing that really got my cleans to work is with guitar pickups, then the amplifier. although some will find the amplifier first, then the pickups. but yea, you have to know about how to strike the strings in order to discover what the stratocaster gives you in return. i know it all sounds cliche, but you'll find out you're good when you know how to make a bad amp sound good.

Do you have any other gear such as pedals, etc.? The tones in these songs are different. You should be fine getting the clean tone of Another Kind of Green with your setup and the switch on your guitar set in between the Neck and Middle pickups (classic Mayer clean tone position) Everyday I have the Blues is a pretty overdriven tone, with a tube screamer or some sort of overdrive pedal like that, and usually with the neck pickup on. Bold as Love usually has a touch of overdrive, or at least a thicker tone. He usually plays it with either the neck pickup or the neck/middle setting. Mayer's technique is obviously important when it comes to his tone, and studying that will help you get closer. Since you're new to the electric, it's just going to take time for you to develop with it. Those songs you named are fairly difficult for a beginner on the electric and a beginner at Mayer's technique, but it will just take some time. You'll learn a lot about how to get certain tones and stuff like that. A strat and a Fender tube amp is a perfect place to start to getting great Mayer like tone. Just listen to what he does when he plays and start the journey of learning it. Good luck and let us know how we can help you on this board. Lots of smart and experienced players around here.

I have no pedals or something. Just the guitar and amp. What would be the best pedal to start with? A ibanez tubescreamer..?

Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Yeah, if you're wanting to play any sort of Mayer style or Strat blues style, you need a Tube Screamer of some kind. TS808, TS9, or something like that. A delay pedal is a good piece to have for any guitar player as well. That should be a good place to start while you concentrate on your clean tone and technique.

Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	To really nail Mayer you might also want to roll off the tone knob just until the high end 'bite' smooths out (maybe down somewhere betwen 7 and 9. you'll have to let your ear tell you when that top end smooths out). Mayer's clean is very mellow and rolling off the highs balances the sound betwen the heavier and lighter strings. As for an overdrive, I don't think you can go wrong with an 808.
