That groove from the Battle Studies video was absolutely sick, I am dying for a leak of the studio version!

The line about why don't you say so probably hit me harder than anything in this song. Been in that boat before. I think of all the useless fights you go
through that could have been resolved by simply saying what on your mind when you're really slow dancing in that burning room, next thing you know its too
late. Stylistically I'm surprised, but I'm not on this one. I guess I was just expecting an even more revved up continuum or something along the lines
of a Trio album for his next release to really get that kick purged and off of his chest. But looking at it now its really somewhere more along the lines of
John's default setting comfort zone. I'm digging it.

Being a fairly musical dude, or someone who has listened to this way too much i'll give my consensus on HW
Ok, JM has gone back to what he was trying to achieve in Continuum and use less chords for a greater effect, which is exactly what he has done in this song (which can be played using a minimum of around 6 chords), it's no neon but greatly reminds me of the chord structure he put forth in Waiting on the World to Change. It helps with what he is saying lyrically, during that first change up you can hear the distinct change, it sounds like a "break" (haha Pun) a cleaver use of change within his song. I like the basicness of it, it shows where he is as a musician, going back to basics, very stripped down, comfortable, relaxing and unfinished. He can take this song God knows where, it reminds me of Gravity, short verses that hit hard with the lyrics What he sings is fantastic, its anyone's guess who its about but going beyond Jen Aniston its just the ending of relationships in general and how both people are genuinely upset. The guitar really reflects this in my opinion, 1st class work by JM |

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree and say that although the less chords greater effect thing, I really don't hear the similarities to the
chords in Waiting on the World to Change. To me it seems like he's starting from and coming from an entirely different point in this one. Even the clip
from the battle studies page shows it to be more coming from something that sounds more like Heavier things to me, but revisited with how he's grown since
then. I guess the missing element to that equation for me would be that every song on Continuum came from this swaggerish soul place, where this one sounds
like he's just being 100% what he and he alone brings to the table style wise. It's like Gravity or Slow Dancing, but minus the trio influence. At
least thats what I hear. To each his own. You say Potato, I say, well probably potato cause I've never heard anyone put the emphasis on the A in potato.

Very thoughtful comments Matt and Tucker. I can't really comment on the music part, but can someone tell me why you have the impression that this is a
"breakup" song. I don't get that at all from the lyrics.

I still think Mayer is not writing the best stuff he can. You can make a GREAT lyrical song but that only does so much for me if it's a boring chord
progression.
Honestly I haven't had the urge to pick up my guitar and learn a new Mayer song in a long time. I think RFS did a really great job of solidifying the ambiance and feeling of the overall song by having an interesting chord progression. St. Patrick's day

When i meant similar to Waiting on the World to Change i meant the style not the exact chords. Where he uses a small amount of chords (compared to something
like St Patricks Day) with that ffect, i think it shows he's trying to do something similar, song wise to Waiting. I also think from the BS preview it
sounds alot like The Heart of Life, i think that Heavier Things (My 2nd favourite album) was very horns and the like influence for the most part (Clarity,
Homelife, Split-Screen Sadness, just dont count Bigger Than My Body) and what he was showing with HW was different to that, i dont think he'll ever go back
in that direction. He's to bluesy now
But to each his own, i totally respect your and others opinions, its amazing what he can do with a guitar and the direction HW can be taken is boundless |

Breakup song, i think it defines Break-Up, because..
1. The title 2. The lyrics "Clouds of Sulfur in the air, Bombs are falling in the air, Its Heartbreak Warfare" Its just saying that Break up is chaos, theres sh!t going everywhere. 3. "If you want more love, why dont you say so" Its saying that if you wanted something more you have to tell me, hes reminiscing (right spelling??) on their relationship Let's just just fix this whole thing now I swear to God we're going to get it right If you put your weapon down and Disappointment has a name: it's heartbreak warfare Support that its a breakup song. That they'll try and fix it, but first you have to let go of everything you dislike about the other person and using it in a hurtful ways (thats the weapon). The last 2 line are fairly self explanatory Really though, its how you want to interpret it, the lyrics are fairly open eneded like any JM song. I just see it as a breakup song, theres why i reckon it is |

Okay, got a wild hair today while the rare instance I actually had a moment to kinda screw off so I came up with this abomination. I was really curious how the
"if you want more love" part would sound with the stylings of the 5 second or so clip of the studio version from the battle studies video, so I
opened up a midi program I have installed here at work, and came up with this thing that almost satisfies me as long as I hum along with it. Its just the
chorus you hear and then my interpretation of how it may segway (totally sp?) into the end of the chorusy thingy. Somewhere true crisp unpretentiously
contrived mininamlistic nuance filled fender tones are crying. Or John Mayer. Sorry. But hey, it does kinda scratch the itch of how short that clip is.

Not bad, that sounds quite good. Interesting so see what you can do when you play around with stuff, nice job!!
Shows that JM can really go anywhere with this song in production |

Wow the new Heartbreak Warfare from the Hotel Cafe show (Mp3 in thread) sounds awesome. I lvoed thag little bit from Kanye's Bittersweet at the end. Such a
huge development from Mayercraft

Sounds really cool. I can get more of a feel of the arrangement with those arpegiatted (sp?) voicings in the beginning. I did really miss the part right before
the breakdown though where he goes up a few octaves on "heart". Hope that makes the album version.

Wow, he really has gone a long way with Heartbreak Warfare since Mayercraft. I love this song. I cried when I heard it for the first time. It's so... to
the point.
