John sings like he's trying to serenade a 5th grader... |

See, this is what happens when I bring a cd to work down in the railyard. Now I work with some rude roughnecks, so there's a lot of ego in the workplace.
I get comments like this all day if I bring this in. Heh, they all acknowledge he can play guitar, but can't get over the voice. Then I have to hear about
Kenny Wayne Sheppard, etc, Johnny Lang, blah, blah, blah. But the comment did crack me up a little...

I don't think he's the best of singers...i'm more into his guitar playin than his voice. He got an excellent (MODERN?) blues voice though...i just
don't like the singing on most of his acoustic songs

This really reminds me of a funny passage from Sting's
He was talking about working at a construction site for the first time when he was young. John's CD is the lunchbox here. "It is now lunch break, and there are about twenty of us on the gang stuffed into a wooden hut at the edge of the site. These are tough burly men crammed onto wooden settles. Everyone lights up and starts reading the Mirror, the Sun, and the Sporting Life while tucking into massive doorstep sandwiches and swilling down great mouthfuls with scalding tea and rude laughter. We are surrounded by a fog of cigarette smoke and the steam from a battered metal urn on the table. Being new, I take my place quietly in the corner. Famished, and with frozen fingers, I prize open the Tupperware container and stare for a brief second with horror at its contents. My darling mum made me a selection of delicate cucumber sandwiches cut into finger-size fours that would not be out of place at a vicar's garden party, but exhibiting them here, in this Dante's Inferno of a builder's shed, would be tantamount to wearing a pink tutu and pearl earrings. I shut the plastic lid quickly before anyone can see the source of my embarrassment, but maybe too quickly. "Wozza marra" "Not hungry," I reply, none too convincingly. I will pack my own lunch from now on.

He may sing like he's trying to serenade a 5th grader, but it also works on 21 year old women. Failing that it also sells a few million records and funds
his new Mercedes so i bet he's happy.

"John sings like he's trying to serenade a 5th grader..." You have to admit that is a good quote LOL. True or not it does, indeed work for him
doesn't it.
I must be bored, I keep finding myself back on this forum again.. |

I had the newest cd from WTLI, so it wasn't the "body is a wonderland" era. Yeah, that quote was a good one though, along with the breathy
impersonations. And leet, I work for Toyota in logistics, but I work down in the railyard with Norfolk Southern...

Yeh he def isn't the greatest singer around, but the ladies sure do seem to like it lol. I'm still surprised everytime I hear him jump into falsetto
with that kinda of round crowe type of voice, especially after he took some coaching for the recording of Say with Roger Love. But in the same token this is
kind of ingrained in mayers sound. It would be weird to hear him sing with a huge range fully connected lol. I agree with Juhan the bluesy type of stuff def
suits his voice better than the Jazzy stuff. Does anyone know if he has taken any other types of singing lessons? But great player, writer and artist, be
interesting to hear some of the roughnecks influences lol i'm sure they would be GREAT.
