Does anyone have any tips for learning how to noodle like John does before he plays "I'm Gonna Find Another You" in WTLI?

It seems to me he really is just playing some blues licks and outlining some jazz voicing every so often. Which basically what this song is, a jazzy
soul-blues.
I was on the hunt to getting better at noodling a few months ago. Basically if you wanna get better at it just do it a lot. Steal tasty licks and just pretty much execute in succession. Its sounds better if you have an underlying progression. The secret I've found is that while moving through the progression stay away from ever fully outlining any chord. Simply "imply" the chords by hitting maybe just one or two of its chord tones. It might help to give the ear a little heads up by establishing the chords early on but don't be too revealing. If you're trying to sound jazzy make sure you know what scale you want to use during each chord. It would probably be a good idea to go ahead and learn your Mixolydian and Dorian mode, Diminished (whole-half), Melodic Minor, Harmonic Minor, on top of your basic Ionian and Aeolian. With that said, I'm gonna go back to playing my blues and rock licks. I'm not THAT interested in sounding jazzy haha. |
