It still has the pickguard plastic on it and seems in mint condition.... but I have a couple of questions about it... Im interested in how old it is but I don't really know how to tell, I read the serial # doesn't tell you on the sunburst models? When I took the pickguard plastic off it left residue/glue behind on basically the whole pickguard now im kind of scared to use anything to get it off because I don't want to hurt the finish....any recommendations? Lastly, the fretboard is pretty lightly/lighter colored compared to my standard rosewood strat, same as the one I played in guitar center although I thought that guitar was just old and dry....Is this how they all are or is mine dried out? Thanks guys

Yes, the serial number will tell you the manufacture date. Use this link: http://www.fender.com/support/usa_instruments.php As for the residue on the pickguard, I would say just leave it there. It will come off in time. If you're really concerned about it, use some sort of mild cleaning product but be careful no to get anything on the pickups. As for the fretboard being light, some fretboards are just colored like that. It doesn't mean that it's dried out or old or anything. It's just naturally colored like that.

Posts: 3 (09/04/2009 11:59 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Thanks for the help...I can see where the serial number listing section has the "SE" prefix for signature series but it only tells for SE9 or SE8 which both only tell it is up to 1990....mine is SE0 as with most JM strats I would guess The resisdue on the pickguard really bothers me its pretty heavy and it makes the pickguard look matte, I can hardly scratch it off with my nail so I might end up having to take the whole pickguard off/apart. Im probably going to take it to a guitar tech to get the fret edges filed a bit and just get it touched up a bit i'll ask him about the pickguard situation Any second opinions about these question are welcome thanks

As far as the film goes, if it's on a pickguard for too long then it leaves behind a nasty sticky substance. That's why its good to take it off asap. For the fretboard, I would use lemon oil, it nourishes and darkens up a dry rosewood fretboard almost instantly.

Its actually quite nice!

Just tape off the wood near the fret ends and take your time. They weren't horrible from the factory but rough enough to be uncomfortable. To get a better idea of the build date of your guitar, and if you're feeling ambitious, you could take it apart and check the date stamps on the heel of the neck, back of the pick guard, and there may even be one inside the body cavity as well. They won't all match of course, but they'll be close to eachother.

They will tell you when it was made. They have some kind of code thing or whatever going on now with serial numbers.
